I am spending 6+ months in the UK with my grandmother and have a question about working while I'm there...
What kind of Identification is required to work in England, and how do I get it? I have all my original birth certificates, etc, but I don't even know where to start. Do you have a national ID card, similar to a State ID card here in the US? Can I get the process going before I get to the UK, or do I have to get everything while working there?
Thanks to anyone that can help!
Answer:
not if your a citizen but you do need to get you national insurance number to work. you get one when you start working so they probably will just assign you your number.
the place where u get them is in liverpool.
The National Insurance Office, Cressington House, St Mary’s Road, Garston, Liverpool
L19, Tel: 0151 801 5110/5105/5115
I would strongly recommend getting a new Brit ppt prior to travel. I would not recommend turning up on a USA ppt and telling the arrivals officer "Well I'm British too...look at this old ppt (not that you can recognise me from the pic) and I'm staying here a while and I might work". If they are satsified you are British you'll not be refused entry - but just get the ppt to save the hassle. You'll need an ID doc that shows you can work in order to get a job (legally) so just get the Brit ppt updated. Approach a British Emabssy or Consulate.
If you have not got a work permit you cannot work here. To get a work permit you must have a job offer, and your employer must apply for you, showing why there is no one here already who can do the job. Consider applying for some seasonal work first
I would contact the British embassy to get your UK passport renewed. That should be all the proof you need of your entitlement to work. When you get your first job, you can apply for a National Insurance number, which is to take care of your tax affairs.
Good luck, and welcome back!
