Was immigration a hot issue in previous elections?

It's always been a issue, but never the HOT issue! Most legal US citizens should want illegals shipped back! I don't mind immigrants who show they want to be good citizens by going through the proper steps! I just spent nearly two weeks around probably 80% people from another country - They all thought they could do what they want and did - Had I done it I would have been sent to jail - What gives???
most people don't know this, but Bush, (before 9/11) actually planned to make illegal students who had been in the states at least 5 years citizens.
I was still in middle school, and the school counselors started handing out forms and information.

Most Americans don't care that much about immigration.it's just the anti-immigrant bigots who scream the loudest.
