Is it important to keep the cultural heritage of Mexicans and Chicanos?
Answer:
Yes. It's important for any culture.
Just as long as its 2nd to USA's culture, granted they're in USA.
not if they want to live in America. If they are worried about preserving their culture, they can do it in Mexico.
not only Mexicans and Chicanos but the cultural heritage of every group of people on this planet. because if you lose sight of who you are and were you come from you will never understand who you are and how to grow.
In Mexico, sure. And everyone should value their heritage.
BUT turn that around. Since it is the US we are talking about, not Mexico,
"Isn't it important to keep the main street USA cultural heritage of Americans?"
Because we think that is as valuable as your own heritage, and we are home in its birthplace.
And if it isn't here, it is completely eradicated world wide.
Thanks, you've just given me an idea.... we should put our 'heritage' on the endangered species list and put laws in place to protect it, as we do the spotted owl.
Yes.
They have such a rich culture that is the very foundation of much of America.
Isn't there a Taco Bell and an El Pollo Loco in your town?
Don't you just love eating it out on your patio?
.
It's just as important as St. Patrick's Day, Oktoberfest, Pow Wows, Hannuka, Pilgrimage reinactments (like that Mormon trail thing), Black History Month, Chinese New Year or Mardi Gras. (and all the ones I left out)
I love more culture, more excuses to party. We can all get together for the 4th of July in the USA, and we can invite each other to other celebrations.
I live on the border of Texas and Mexico and I say NO!
We need to do everything we can to stop the invasion of illegal immigrants. Believe me the Mexicans are doing a great job a preserving THEIR culturial beliefs and they are not willing to adopt ours, we need to push back. Blacks, Asains and Caucasions need to put their differences aside and start taking action aginst the Illegal immagrants. Who do you think is draining Medicare and Pension plans? I do believe it is important to preserve culturial heritage but America is supposed to be a melting pot of culture, not a hillside under attack from a glacier.
It's important for any group to keep their cultural heritage. But if you are talking about in relation to immigration, it's also important to learn the cultural heritage of the country you move to. Economically, Mexicans and others who have moved to the U.S. have done the best economically if they have learned English and taken advantage of the educational opportunities available. It doesn't mean giving up who you are culturally, it means developing and adapting to your new circumstances to take maximum benefit of the opportunities available.
Just about everyone in the U.S. is derived from immigrants and the culture here is varied and rich as a result. The Mexican population that is immigrating here simply adds to that diversity. Moving to another country always means some adjustments. Whenever I travel abroad (or if I ever decided to live abroad), I don't assume others must automatically adopt my cultural prefererences, though I would hope they would be open enough to learn about them.
I absolutely believe it is important to keep the culture of the country and peopel where you live. If you live in Mexico, by all means assimilate, become part of that culture and heritage, celebrate it because that is what a Mexican does.
If you are an american, celebrate the american culture. The two are mutually exclusive. If you are new to our country, welcome, hope you came legally, work hard and you will do well in this country of endless opportunity, but assimilate, become an american regardless of where you were born.
In Mexico/South of border it is important
In the USA it is important to become assimilated
The USA has a heritage of mixed/blended culture
A blend of all not of a few
You liberal multiculturalists are too dumb to realize that emphasizing race actually increases racism because it emphasizes our differences instead of our similarities.
If you want to keep your cultural heritage, STAY IN MEXICO.
If you want to become an American, immigrate legally, learn English, pay taxes, pay your hospital bills, and stop having kids that you can't afford so that U.S. taxpayers don't have to pay for your welfare.
it's important to know your roots, not just chicanos but everyone else, and yes you have to assimilate to the "culture" of where you live but you can do it without forgeting where you come from!
They can keep it all they want........in MEXICO!!!!
Choosing specifically to mention Mexicans and Chicanos in your question is setting it up for a debate on race and ethnicity. It is important to know where you came from. Respecting, honoring and preserving cultrual heritage is important. It's in the foods you eat, and how you observe holidays, and how your family gets along an spends time together, and it helps provide a foundation for your ethics and morals and values. It's part of how you practice religion, and how you handle joy or sadness or serious illness, and even in the words you use to talk about things. It's woven through so many things, and to discard that would be shameful and sad. The idea is to balance the preservation of any culture or heritage that you identify with with the majority culture of where you're living, not to subvert one, or discard or repress or eliminate one, but to blend the two together, so that you can function as a member of society where you're living, and still retain where you came from.
