What happens if an illegal alien wants to book a flight back home because the US was not what she had hoped?
Answer:
There is no restriction on purchasing a plane ticket. Before the airline will let her on board, they will want to see a passport, so she should make sure her travel documents are up to date by contacting her embassy in the US.
While she should leave if she is not in valid status, she should also be aware that leaving the US may subject her to the 3/10 year bars on reentry (3 years if here more than 6 months, 10 years if here more than 1 year). If she wasn't happy here, that probably won't bother her.
If he/she figured out how to get here "illegally", then he/she will figure out how to get back to where ever they came from!
My understanding is that it wouldn't be a problem at all because they would rather the illegal immigrant not be in the country. Although, she would probably be forfeiting her ability to ever return.

They should go to their country's embassy within the US (if there is one) and ask to be issued with a passport. Then buy a ticket back home. :-)
go to the nearest airport walk up to the first american patriot you see and ask them for their ticket. After you tell them why I guarantee you'll be on your way home and don't let the door hit ya in the butt on the way out.
Duhh .. they go home. You don't need proof of U.S. residency if you're ticke it one way.
Why not just turn themselves in to the immigration office and have them deport her.
