How did the immigration issue turn into an excuse for racism?
I hear all kinds of things such as " If they're in this country, they should speak english" or " They are taking over our country."
As a hispanic and a young woman, it deeply disturbs me that some people could be so incredibly stupid.
I can understand that illegal immigrants are breaking a law and I am not encouraging that, but what I am against is comments such as the one above.

CRAP!! The majority of illegal aliens are Mexican, Central American and South American. It is they that are sneaking over our borders and breaking our laws. WHY can they not apply legally and then come when they are approved?? My Husbands family did why can't they??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!

I am totally with you on the discrimination issue. The underling issues are the pain caused by illegal occupation, of which everyone who uses their labor is at fault. It is hard to be civil when you know the cost. As a American I feel we all should find the right way to address the problem and sniping and hurtful comments do not change laws. You are right to point this out.
Don't expect us to surrender our culture for yours, you left yours...

I do agree however, that illegal Mexicans or any race out of the USA should beome legal if they wish to stay. And even though I love the Spanish language and think everyone should learn it, English should be the official language of the USA as it has been for years. I have nothing against Mexicans speaking Spanish to help keep their culture alive and so that their kids would keep their heritage but I also feel that anyone living here should be fluent in English (reading, writing and speaking). We should not have to spend tax money to pay teachers to teach both, devise ballots in two languages or even more or change road signs.
Racism is ignorance and should not be tolerated. Everyone should be created equal.
Compassion, Tolerance and Understanding can go a long way to make peace.
Also keep in mind that many Mexicans who were born here or grew up here do not like the way our borders are open and the country is getting flooded with those of our neighboring country. I grew up in Yuma, AZ and my best friend was Mexican, born here but parents from Mexico. Even they feel that the USA is becoming over-populated and that our services, schools, postal, etc can not keep up. So when do we draw the line or is everyone from any country welcome at any time with no restrictions?
This is a country of over 12 million illegal Mexicans AND American Citizens of all shapes, sizes and colors.
I don't distinguish that fact.

I used to think immigrants should go back, but I think differently now.
I wandered the same thing when I was being beat up by some illegals, when I was standing on the same corner as them, waiting for day labor job. But fortunately, I had taken some sociology and psychology while in college, and realized that they were merely oppressed minorities, expressing their opposition to real Americans.

because those people who are acused of that don't want a lot of Mexicans running around the US. but if they see a lot of illegal Irish people they wouldn't mind at all. if they look at someone, who is white, they would never in there minds ever think they might be illegal as well. that is the sad truth, where people assume all illegals are people of color, or Mexicans.

One of my colleagues is of Spanish ancestry. Her grandparents were born in Spain. She opposes illegal immigrants.
Another is from Africa and he is fluent in English.
My daughter-in-law is from France and she considers it rude not to use English here. My son learned French for their visits there.
We are not using the immigration issue as an excuse for racism, but the actions of the illegals protesting and ranting for benefits they haven't earned surely seem to be directed at provoking it.

The only TRUE Americans are the Native People! This land was taken by the Euroamericans and later land was seized after a treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. WHY? For more land...1.7 million acres of land that was taken from the Mexican Citizens who were living on the land. They were forced to leave.THey are the true people who belong here! Anyways, If people and the Washington lady knew her forefathers history she'd also know the origial Declaration of Independance which is this Countries Supreme Law... was written in English AND in SPANISH!! SO, if our forefathers wanted it that way, then it should still be that way.

Oh if no one wants to use the race card why do they start stereotyping saying Immigrants don't speak English. I'm sorry but all my family, friends, neighbors, people in college know English. Even family and friends who live in Mexico. You all base your thoughts on stereotypes you see in the Media and on the small percentage that is portrayed.

i would expect people who want to come to this country and live be able to speak the language of this country which is english. I would never expect to go to another country and have them bend over backwards for me. But the illegals who are here come here, many work for nothing and are being exploited by the companies who hire them, don't pay taxes, take advantage of our social programs, fill up our prisons, and overcrowd our school systems. I don't think its fair that as a citizen i am expected to live by the laws of this country, work my butt off, pay taxes and follow the rules when people who are here illegally don't have to do so. I am all for immigration reform, but not amnesty. We need to make it better to come here legally and take the advantages out of being here illegally. I think that you have no right to talk about people being racist when you are racist your self! The United states is also made up of Mexican Americans, African Americans, Chinese Americans, Korean Americans, etc. and I am sure that also feel the same way and make the same comments as us "white people" do. If I went to go live in another country, I would learn their lauange before I moved there and I would do it legally.You are saying that we should learn Spanish? I do not think so! If I wanted to learn another lauange, I would learn one from my own heritage! First things first, I guess... Alot of comments you see and hear are in fact RACIST! Not many people who are against illegals can keep from spouting something racist. (There are of course a few) Nor are their many who don't speak for illegals who don't say something RACIST! Spanish,German and French were a few languages taught at my school over 12 yrs. ago and I would have loved to learn spanish! It goes both ways! I have a child with an illegal mexican and I do not agree with the way he came here, but for now it's done. I am white and may have some black or indian blood (don't know for sure, but I was born from someone who was born and etc. etc!) but hey I am LEGAL!! Second for those of you who know spanish I would love to learn more than the cuss words I know. My daughter will want to know some words I'm sure and her father is unwilling to teach me. You know what? That's B.S. and everybody knows it. Let me give you an example.
What if I walked into your house, univited, and asked for your money, and asked to be treated *not equal* with your own established family, but BETTER than them. What if I came in and started decorating your house with all my things and said "screw you" if you didn't like it. What if came in and lived there, and used your stuff and ate your food, and then refused to contribute any money to the household?
You'd be angry if I did that. You'd call the police. You'd kick me out, right?
That is what is happening in America. And it is not racist to dislike the surge of Mexican illegals. I have NOTHING against Mexicans. I have NOTHING against immigrants. However, I do have something against illegals from ANY country who come to America and demand rights---when they are here ILEGALLY in ther first place!
This isn't about racism. It's about courtesy and plain old fashioned manners.
If I were to move to Mexico, you know what I would do? I would save every penny until I had enough to get there LEGALLY. I would make a huge effort to learn Spanish; I would respect the culture. I would pay taxes. Why? because that's just good manners, good karma, and the decent upstanding thing to do.
I understand there are a lot of very poor, hurting people who want nothing more than to get out of Mexico and come to America---and I understand it's not an easy thing to do. HOWEVER there is a big difference between doing what is right, and what is easy.
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
And don't move into someone else's country and refuse to respect them, their culture, their lifestyle, their thoughts, their laws, their language and their government. And then demand "rights". It's ridiculous.
I agree with you but don't worry; whites will be a minority soon. I can't wait for the day they start packing their trailers and go back to where ever it is they think they came from. We'll just keep the cool white people here, which by the way, is the majority of them. It's only these trailer park trash people that are intimidated by illegal immigrants.
