Is poverty in Mexico "true poverty" or is it just plain-ol "poverty" like anywhere else?

It doesn't matter where you are, poverty is poverty. Why is poverty in Mexico different than that of the United States? Just as in Mexico (and other third world countries), there are sections of the US where you couldn't even imagine how poor people are.

Answer:
Good luck with this one, I answered a person who truly didn't believe that there was a poor person in the U.S. My past jobs included being an Electric Meter Reader in Philadelphia for 12 years, and I saw poverty going in and out of so called homes, rooms, apts, and on the streets. I tried to help as much as I could you can't help but to feel responsible for these people in some way, But, when I described to the person I was answering, what poverty I had seen throughout the years, they told me I was a liar, it didn't exist in America, I didn't know what I was talking about, and the poorest people in America, were people who couldn't afford the latest version of Play Station, Nintendo, etc...or the new Cable TV. Then they told me that they knew this because they had seen it in other countries, and now that they live here, they don't see anything but spoiled people who have too much. Of course they couldn't be contacted thru E-mail or IM, so they chose my answer as the best, in order to tell me off, at least I made 10 pts. for it. But, I was steamed, so don't be surprised if clueless people answer this, and tell you that you don't know what poverty is.
what???,,,, man don't understand,, you just want to be funny?
There are countries out there who have it a lot worse. Mexico actually has it pretty good if you ask me.
In a lot of underdeveloped countries there is extreme poverty occuring in a lot higher quantity than the US. However, Mexico does not have welfare or gov. assistance programs to help.
AFRICA IS POOR, MEXICO IS NOT
Look at this way, Mexico's average Income per capita is $7,310. The average U.S. per capita income is $34,586.

You do the numbers..

I visit Mexico frequently..Inflation has really gotten out of control.Consumer products are much more expensive than they are here..Case in point, electronics are about 20% more over there, than here.Auto's same thing.Mexicans love American products..They pay a premium for them. The only thing cheaper, is food..Honestly, I don't understand how people survive over there.MOST do without.Another thing, they have no credit there...You can't buy a car, a home, furniture, appliances etc, because you have to pay cash..As I have said before, get out in the world and see how the real world is, we are really protected in this country. We take so much for granted.
Everyone in the US is rich compared to people in Mexico.
I've never been to Mexico, but I sure have seen some of the poverty stricken areas of the U.S. No one should have to live in the conditions that some of our citizens do.

It really makes me sick to see what they've done in areas like Baltimore and Philadelphia - they've built walls along the sides of the highways, so that people traveling through don't see the undesireable neighborhoods, the falling down tenements, etc. that people live in.

Edit: Coulterbasher is absotlutely right - some sections of Philly are downright awful.
The difference between poverty in the US, and poverty in the 3rd world, is that the US provides a safety net of programs for its poor: Medicaid/Medicare, social security, welfare, immunization programs, food stamps, free healthcare, free compulsory education, etc, that are unheard of in poor countries. In those countries, when you are poor, you are truly and utterly *&^^&%ed.

Does that mean that the US taxpayer has some obligation to take care of the poor from Mexico? No. Does that stop them from coming here? You tell me.
Goes to show how ignorant you are.
If there's involvement with Cartels Americans whine.
If they are not involved they should be!
Go figure exactly what it is that is happening next door!!!
Because the so called right wing volchers here have no real idea about any thing that is going on en MEXICO.
OR HERE FOR THAT MATTER!!!
Poverty in Mexico isn't much different than poverty in America. I don't see it as the same poverty as Africa etc. People there literally have ground that has no nutrients to grow things, other places have water that is nothing more than raw sewage flowing. Compared to other areas of the world.our poverty pales in comparison. I am by no means disregarding the pain of poverty in any country..but it's one thing to have beans and tortillas 3 times a week vs people who try to get by sucking grass. There's areas in Africa where they are so starved physically they couldn't physically eat a piece of toast let alone sink their teeth into a burger because their bodies don't even know how to digest things anymore. I always wondered why it was this mush that looked like infant cereal in their bowls that they show after a food drop. Basicly that's what it is because they couldn't digest much more. Just like a baby working it's way to solid food they have to do that with adults and starving children. That's real poverty to me.

My dad used to say poor was not having a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out of. I knew people from Russia where the core of cabbage was like a once a year treat...like candy. Poor is having cardboard to put on the bottom of your worn out shoes...poverty is not having shoes or rags to wrap around your feet. Now it's you're "poor" if you don't have Nikes, I-Pod, cable, cell, etc. Denying of "human rights" means you have beanie weinies in jail once a week. Please. There's people in our jails living better than the poor in our own country.

There's no "pyramid" of healthy foods in Africa. They aren't accusing parents of neglect and abuse for not having 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day for their kids and doing a mass "saving of the children" from "criminal" parents.

It's relative for the country you live in. I live below what they say is "poverty" level. But it's no where close to that of Africa. A big drop when you have people like Edwards paying $400 bucks for a haircut. Paris Hilton probably wouldn't want to come to my shanty. But I'm not poverty. In my opinion. Poor...not even coz I have a car, computer, cable TV. etc. Guess it's where your at. Too poor to go the movies, but I'll rent one. Too poor to handle the furnace breaking down.but until then, I can pay the gas.
I know you are just pretending.you must be.If not,I'll explain it to you AGAIN. 3rd world poverty : No running water,no toilet, you eat once a day if your lucky,no car, free public schooling until the 6th grade only.USA poverty : Go to your local DHS office and get emergency food stamps, then go to housing and get on the section 8 list. You get a FREE bus pass every month plus RIte Care (Medical insurance).Which one is the better deal for you, buddy ?
angela R you are retarted if you are gonna compare money. The mexicans use pacos which is like an 18 to 1 american .

I not agree, poverty is not the same wherever you are, is not the same in Africa like Mexico, and obvious, is not the same in United States
