Actually Perendosi is right. My great grandparents came straight off a boat from Italy to Ellis Island. After finding a home they signed up for citizenship classes and studied hard to learn the language, history, and culture of America.
There are people at my job who have been here eight years and can't speak a lick of English.
Here in Mexico, telephones have "For English, press 9".
And no one has a problem with it. Why should you?

No it should not be banned. There are any legal citizens who have learned the language who still feel more comfortable conducting business transactions in their native tongue. There are also people who are here legally that fit in the same category. I see this as an opportunity to develop another skill and become more marketable in the work place.
i'm not usually one to get anal over grammar and spelling, especially since i tend to make many spelling mistakes myself.
but if you are going to post a question about how english is the american language i'd suggest you make sure your grammar is correct. otherwise your point loses credibility and you make americans look ignorant.
No. I'm not so lazy that pressing 1 is an issue to me.
We are a nation of immigrants, and I would guess that if you look backward a few generations, your grandparents, or great grandparents, probably couldn't speak English when they got here. And I'd guess that most of them couldn't speak English when they died, either. But their kids could.
The question is whether you want to deny first-generation immigrants access to "government documents" (i.e. voting pamphlets, essential governmental warnings, jury duty notices, etc.) because you're too insecure that you are unwilling to learn another language. I certainly agree that English immersion classes are helpful, and that language is a unifying factor. But why put up unnecessary barriers to those who are just learning the language, if and when they have all the citizenship rights that you or I do?
(And "press 1 for English" would never be banned, because that's private enterprise. For some reason, businesses realize that their customers might be comfortable speaking in another language, so they're going to accommodate, regardless of "official" languages. So should the government be any less flexible? If people can get a credit card in Spanish, shouldn't they be able to get a voter information packet?)
whats even worse: the other day I called a company and had to push 2 for English, we were pushed back a notch to make room for spanish!! That's just kinda messed up,lol.
Yes I agree completely. Some towns are actually making legislation declaring English is the Offical language (they just did here), and all Govt. offices can ONLY be done in English.

Banned? More government regulations? However, I do think that if someone comes to America to live, work, etc... (legally, by the way), they know we are an English speaking country with our own culture we have developed over the years. I think others coming here should expect to conform to our way of life, not demand we cater to them and conform to theirs. Companies offer this type of a choice because they want to do business with everyone they can, including ones that can't speak English. Do I object, YES. Should it be a company's choice, YES. Should the government be printing multi-language forms, pamplets, etc..., NO.
Why was it started in the first place? That is why I don't understand everyone being so angry with the illegal immigrants when they should put that anger toward the people that are putting all of these things in place. Yes they come here illegally but if the red carpet is rolled out for them that is not their fault and they should not be treated badly because of it. This problem is like any other fix it or stop complaining.

We speak English here. IT is a gracious sweetness that we encourage and try to meet the needs of others. That has ended due to the current situation. We are feeling raped, mugged and victimized by the illegals, mostly from Mexico.
This is caused mostly because law and order were not maintained but evidence suggests things are being changed.
I had biz with the county Tax Collector a while ago. When I called, the message was in English and then I had to listen to the same rap in Spanish, THEN I got to go on in English. The Spanish. speakers had to press whatever.
I was PO'd that I had to even LISTEN to the Span. intro. I wrote a letter to the Tax collector in complaint. Intro in English, then let the non English speaker press. Why shoul I have to listen to that jive! If you can own or buy RE in this state, you can speak English too.

Why isn't Chech, Polish, Gaelic, Greman, Watusi and other languages included in the telephone menu? Having multiple languages is not a waste, its a privilege and an advantage. I speak four languages and for my business it is a HUGE advantage. I am able to converse and connect with my clients on a personal level. So if you are ask to hit one, I don't think it will kill ya!
