No, I can't think of anything to support it either. You come to a country, you ought to be able to pay your own way and engage in culture. To do that, you need to speak the language.

Agreed. In few years, technology will be developed that will make language obsolete. We have very good translator developed by IBM that render spoken language on casual level and not mechanized translation that we were plauged. When it becomes portable enough people can wear like masks and anything they say can be translated and heard. This will end language barrier for sure.
There is no support for it, why would you live in a country and not speak the language? What if you need medical attention? Do you plan to act out charades until someone understands you? We should not have to force anyone, every person who plans to make the US their home should learn to speak the language for their own safety as well as ours.

Immigrants work in this country. They're already putting in their fair share. Anyone who thinks that people should be forced to learn English or otherwise "assimilate" should be deported. America is not the pinacle of human society. We can do much better than this, but first we need to stop idolizing ourselves.
Who says English is the language here? We're a melting pot are we not? Let's learn to accept all cultures and not force a majority language on them. Just because English is the majority of America, does not mean all Americans have to speak English.

English is our native language if you come here legally you are required to be minimally proficient in English and US history. I don't think this is to much to ask before we grant you the most precious thing the American people can give, CITIZENSHIP.

First, let me say, i learned Spanish so i could communicate with hot latina's and it paid off well. Basically, my argument would be that the marketplace will punish the immigrants that do not learn English. This being a free market society, there is no reason to force someone to learn English. That would be like forcing everyone to go to college. Sure, it is a benefit, but i say individual rights are more important. For example, the right to not be able to communicate with English speakers.
well i from it experience have found it very very difficult to try to communicate with non-english speaking people in this country and we as Americans should not have to learn a different language to benefit others who choose to come here they should learn how to communicate basic needs and emotions at least and eventually learn to be fluent
