Where have all the bohemians gone? Where should I move? Need help!?

I currently reside in Portland, Oregon. I moved here 2.5 years ago because I wanted to live around other anarchists, bohemians, misfits, feminists, atheists, socialists, queers, and every other anti-Republican, anti-Focus on the Family, anti-McWalMartkulture type of person left in this country (every one else seems to have fled to Canada). Problem is, all of the yuppies from California have decided they want to move here too! And everyone here knows what happens when a bunch of white people with money and trust funds and rich parents decides to move into neighborhoods: rents skyrocket, ugly, faceless condos spring up like weeds, Blacks and other poor people have to move to the suburbs, jobs get snapped up by trust-fund gossips with their multiple degrees that mom and dad paid for, the artists and musicians leave because they can't afford to live there anymore, etc. Would Olympia, WA or Seattle, WA be comparable to Portland culture or is the yuppie plage spreading there as well?

Answer:
The unfortunate answer is that the "plague" is everywhere, and spreading. Olympia seems very cool, also Bellingham. I've not lived in either place. I used to live in Seattle and really liked it except it's too big for my taste, and forget about it being affordable! I always thought it was actually a little less redneck than even Portland.

Living costs are somewhat lower in places like Austin (if you like hot summers), or Fayetteville, AR ( generally conservative, but becoming more bohemian and diverse than you might think), but neither place is really that low-cost anymore - just less than the Pac NW. I've lived near Austin (good music and diverse population - laid-back with a generally live-and-let-live attitude, but surrounded by alot of GW Bush country).

I'm still looking for a US-utopia too, and not sure if such a place exists anymore. Canada has alot to offer in terms of what you're looking for, but is certainly not perfect in all ways either. (My daughter has a close friend living near Vancouver BC). I'd seriously be looking at New Zealand if it weren't on the other side of the world!
Lots of people try being nincompoops for a while; then they look around and start living productive lives, realizing that paying taxes is all that matters in life.
Wow, you need to relax dude! Take some friggin anti-uptight medicine.
Try Provincetown, Massachusetts.
don't move **** it up there and say you went down in a blaze of glory then leave.
any place you move to (except Canada) is pretty much the same these days. everybody wants safe secure place to live, but the safer it gets the less creativity and struggle there is. less struggle equals less bohemian. less bohemian equals less creativity. you want someplace try a trailer park near oil city Michigan.conflict, creativity, the free share of ides. kinda like Seattle during the Cobain years.
Get thee outta here!
Central African Republique
Try bohemian grove.
There is certainly more to life than paying taxes and going home everynight to watch csi etc etc.

I reccomend to you to get out of the US,maybe get a bus and move to san miguel de allende, alot of artsy americans live there its very bohemian and the rents are very cheap.Though it has definately become very monied up/popular now, artistic people bring the culture and arts which end up making cities popular.

Otherwise Europe, america is primarily a commerical souless country. In Australia [where i live] there are plenty of bohemian areas Byron Bay,Newtown,Melbourne,Blue mountains.
