Should I immigrate away from the States?

Hello, my name is Travis. I am a gay male. I am sad because in my country "The land of the free, home of the brave" I am treated like a second class citizen. I can not legaly Marry my significant other. If I get married anyway the marriage wouldn't be legal and I don't get the same rights and privileges of strait couples. I am also sad because of America's Foreign policy which has gotten very controversial, very corrupt in recent times.I am considering either Canada or the Netherlands. Both countires allow gay marriage with all the same rights and privilages. And on top of that in Amsterdam THC is legal but caffeen is not. Which is fine as I'm not a coffee drinker. My only fear is if I might regret this decision years down the line. For example. What if after immigrating the U.S. economy prospers but Holland gets flooded out and it's economy going to pasture. Or what if after so many years America turns around and gives equal rights to people like myself.Should I immigrate?

Answer:
Travis, part of this may be where you are living. There are pockets that are very accepting of gay people. I understand the marriage issue, but you can hire a lawyer and get most of the paperwork done so that your partner has power of attorney, medical power of attorney, and other legal issues. And you can have a ceremony to celebrate your union.

As for other issues, every country will have it's issues. It's about which problems you prefer. Some have higher crime, values that might not work for you, climate you can't tolerate, bad job market. You just don't know until you get there.

If you are considering a move, research like crazy and find a gay friendly Realtor who can help you find a good, safe, friendly community. It would also be a good idea to visit before you actually move. Spend the summer and see if you like it, if you can find work, what the housing is like, etc.

It's almost 2008, so you might want to see how the election plays out. Could give you some insight into the direction we're headed and help you decide whether to stay or go.

Good luck!
Bye, eh. Enjoy the wooden shoes.
Hang in there, never give up...believe me..your situation will only get worse in other country. Latin America? Too catholic and conservative. Europe? They hate americans, Africa? you really dont need the extra burden of a life threatening disease....See my point?
There's no guarentees in life good buddy......you just have to make the best decision you can with the information you have. There is no free ride.
If you immigrate, then make sure you do it the right way. Some countries treat immigrants worse then America. Do your homework, first.
You can't immigrate away from anywhere, though you could emigrate if you wish.
Canada would probably be a good choice. Wouldn't recommend the Netherlands as global warming is going to render that country into a swamp soon. On the other hand, you could move to Massachusetts and stick around for the fight. What you are really saying is that you would rather flee than fight. I prefer to fight. That's why I joined the ACLU.
Bye bye. Have fun wherever you go. I am sure that no one here will miss you.
With countrymen like these above, it might be a good idea!
Yes, please do, we and you will be happier.

As for possible regrets, wherever you decide to go, just be an illegal alien (oops, undocumented immigrant). That way, you can be loyal to whatever country you find convenient.
