What is a visa and how do I get one?

I want to live in the US. I'm from the UK. What is a visa and how would I get one that would enable me to live there?

Answer:
A visa is a small document attached to your passport that allows you to travel in a specific country (like the USA) for a limited amount of time-6months for the US. You can get them at the same place (I don't know what you call 'em in the UK) you aquired your passport. They're NOT very expensive. But, in order to LIVE in a specific country you will need to apply for citizenship, and /or marry a national of that country.
visas let you come in the country
you have to buy them and they cost tons,,like 100,000 us dollars
you can get on the lay a way plan though and pay some each month
send your first payment to me at my business

DISCOUNT VISAS
go to uscis.gov

However, the most common one for the UK is the H1B (or else the marriage visa) and they won't be available again until next April. You can visit for 90 days or 6 months if you get it extended, but to live here you have to go through the hoops you will find on that web page.
A visa is a doucument placed on stamped in your travel doucement giving you legal permission to be in the US. Visas can only be obtain through the US Embassy or US Immigration Dept.
You can:

invest in US and get business investor visa. They are 2 kinds: immigrant and non immigrant. If you have 1 million dollars you can get immigrant visa or green card. If you have less, your investment has to be between 30-50% of the value of the business.

If you are educated, and have a degree equivalent to BS in US, you can get work visa.

If you are single, you can marry a US citzien and get green card.
