I have a 6 month visa and would like to stay in the USA for more than six months. Also how long must I stay away from the USA having just spent 5 months 2 weeks there? I am retired.

I assume you've go a multiple entry visa.
1. You can apply for an extension which is unlikely to be granted.
2. You can leave on time, wait a few months, and come back. Odds are they'll let you back in although they don't have to.
get a job some where and the write an application to the department which issues visa and tell them that you have a job over hear and you want to extend your visa.
