How can Mexicans get U.S. drivers license when they can't speak English?

Exactly. I am in no way against immigration... I just believe that they should do it the legal way... the way my ancestors and my husbands grandparents (from Italy) had to do it.by learning English and finding a job and filling out all the paperwork. Its such crap that nowadays to get paid more, you have to learn someone else's language in your own country!
BTW, I was an MP in Fort Stewart, GA... and 99% of the time that i pulled over someone who was hispanic... they had a fake license.. and I had to have them deported.
And since you were in the service too, then you should agree with this...
Every time a soldier/marine deploys to a foreign country, we are expected to learn their customs and culture and unless we speak their language, we have to tote around interpreters in our trucks. Sooo... why is it that when someone comes into our country, we are expected to adapt to them and their language....
what about the written permit test? How do they get the permit if they don't know english? Do they offer it in spanish too? I just am not so sure this is possible.

Um, try living close to the border. Here, it is essential for us to know both languages. Unfortunately, I am still learnins spanish. Some things like spead signs and warning signs are pretty universal.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Last I knew, English was the MAJOR language in the US or am I wrong? Yes, if they want to come here so badly, then they should learn to speak English.

And just what it is about driving that requires specific language skills?? The manuals are available in several languages (not just English and Spanish) here in California to facilitate educating non-English speaking drivers in understanding the rules of the road.
Don't you think that's a whole lot better than them perhaps not properly understanding the English printed version and not really knowing what they are supposed to do or not do out in traffic? I sure feel safer that way.

The written test is offered in the native language, or through an interpreter. The driving test through an interpreter. Thank you ACLU.
you don't have to speak English to read a Spanish book. also you can get fake ids. tiny parts of Cali have places where you don't need to speak English.

You can't get a license unless you're a citizen, and most of them at that point know enough to get by. And also, since we have no national language here, they offer the test in Spanish.

Some of you should really open your minds just a little. Many people come here and within months are speaking a little English, and within a year are nearly fluent. After two years, many can read, write, and speak better than some of you who grew up in this country. Stop bashing immigrants. America was built on the backs of immigrants from all countries. Immigrants have died fighting in Iraq for America while you were at home on your PS2. The DMV is part of the state government and they have standard rules all have to follow to get a license. So stop spreading hate and do yourself a favor; pick up a book and learn the meaning of "bienvenidos"!
In texas the test and handbook are in spanish and english.

there are named Hammad ,Mohamed , Ali , and Apu. and they barely speak English so put your foot back on the ground we (USA) are a multicultural Country , and not only Mexicans Drive in USA, with little or non knowledge of English language. thank you now thumb up for me please.

I've read many comments here and they are unrealistic.
The fact is, that regardless of what you argue, there are many different types of immigrants coming over. Some come over and learn English, some dont, and some learn enough to get by.
The problem is we are catering to everyone. You will not get the same treatment if you go to Mexico. Go to Mexico and demand to get a driver's license and have signs in English and people speaking English every where you go.
The people suffering the most are the middle class. We are incurring the cost of higher health care while illegal immigrants pay 0 dollars for a hospital visit. How is that fair? yes it is ridiculous to give them drivers licenses. Just because I argue for this doesnt mean I hate immigrants like most liberals are spinning. You can't be an American and hate immigrants.
We are one of the only countries with such open immigration laws and even though they were being created with good intentions, now they are being exploited.
Same reason your ancestors did not bother to learn the language of the Cree, Seminole, Apache, and many other tribes. They don't care about your laws..
There are institutions that offer spanish translation services for driver license. It depends on where you live. Some states have multiple language translation services (Chinese, Korean, etc.) for ppl who don't speak english.

and I don't know what you mean by soley saying "Mexican." a lot of people consider themsleves Mexican but are also Americans. remember, being American is a nationality, but they have culture and background and you can't take that way.

God only know how the can get drivers licenses in the US. Sorry to hear about losing your friends in Iraq.My step-dad was a POW in two major US wars (WW11 and Korea) and I am sure he didn't go through hell for illegals!!
