Some people really did buy plan tickets to come to Australia. Sheikh Hilaly is probably not stupid. Even so-called "illegal immigrants" often flew to Indonesia. I don't especially want to defend Sheikh Taj but he was referring to the voluntary nature of the immigration of many non-Anglo Australians rather than any thing else about its nature. I feel for people waiting to come to Australia through the established legal refugee channels, too, but there is also no doubt in my mind that many of the Middle Eastern refugees over the years have been genuine refugees in U.N. terms and I trust the Australian government with the aid of the people to deal appropriately with the others.
