Why isn't the u.s. government doing anything about illegal immigration and our open borders?

Simply because of the underground society. You ever drive by houses during the day when everyone is at work - mexican lawn workers are everywhere. You ever notice how many janitors are mexican? or how many maid services are mexican. Or how many laborers are mexican? Well, they all work together and live together and are an integral part of society. Businesses need them to be cheap labor. Once they become legal businesses are required to pay 7.5% social security tax and other employment taxes. Don't fool yourself, the US Government is run by the businesses for the businesses. Illegal immigration is good for business, so therefore the US Government will not do anything about it, republicans or democrats - their campaign money is mostly from businesses...

Of course, it will become a campaign topic to get votes for the 2008 elections, but after November it will not be mentioned again until the next campaign cycle.
The two beneficiaries of illegal immigration are: 1.) the Mexican government, and 2.) US business (which is the same as being the US government). Since the richest and most powerful of both countries benefit by the current system – it will remain the current system. Get used to it.

For illegal immigrants once amnesty occurs, it will be a big celebration at first until they start to figure out that companies won't hire them now that they have citizenship so companies will turn to fresh illegal immigrant faces to do the job the new citizens are too lazy to do.
You can complain as a citizen if you aren't being treated fairly and companies like illegal immigrants because
1. They don't complain (actually they do but the boss just doesn't speak spanish so the boss don't know)
2. Work for less
3. Don't have to pay worker's comp
4. Don't have to pay unemployment benefits
5. Don't have to provide insurance policies
6. treat you like you are disposable. There is always another Maria and Jose to fill the spot.
7. Can wave your illegal status if the boss does speak spanish and hear you complain
Once amnesty happens, the new citizens are going to have a tougher time than imagined and I wonder how long before the new citizens start to protest against the illegal immigrants doing their jobs?
They deport people everyday !! but the thing its that to deport 20 million people all of a sudden its not an easy task.
Where have you been? You now need a passport to cross the Canadian/US border. If you travel in the states bordering on Mexico, you will be stopped at checkpoints at various places. There are things being done. The fact is, though, that anyone who really wants to can enter the USA. Look at the map; unless you station half the US population along the two main borders with binoculars, there is no way of closing the borders short of building a wall. Furthermore, the coastline is open most everywhere and any enterprising person with a boat can land in a million places under cover of darkness. What exactly would you have your government do??
In order for them to do something about it - voters must be willing to complain about it to their local political parties. The politicians they voted into office to represent them. All parties, not just one or the other. And voters just can't complain about the illegal immigrants alone - they must also complain about the rental housing agencies who rent to them. About the companies, businesses, employers who hire them. About making it a law so those companies, businesses, and employers have to pay illegals the same as any Naturalized citizens, American citizens, and those who are non-citizens, but are here legally to have an effect on putting a halt to this nonsense. But Congress has no jurisdiction over Immigration or Asylum. Each and every State does. Each state grants who is and isn't US citizens, and that includes anchor babies. Noted in this link

One very big reason... It is called the North American Union (Mexico, the USA and Canada into one country...like the EU) They are pushing this through by partaking in things like NAFTA and the SPP. There are even states which are trying to get the USA to withdraw FROM the SPP. Chertoff sends Memo's to the people of the DHS that the DHS answers to the SPP and NOT the USA CITIZENS or CONGRESS!
