Could I live and work in another country...?
like, say i lived and worked in england..would i be eligible for the services that their government provides? would i have to pay taxes/bills to england or the united states or both? would i be able to live, work, and receive benefits from that country if i had debts to pay (ie loans) in america?
I'm only 15..so really right now this doesn't pertain to my life. But i am deeply considering moving away from the US and possibly becoming a citizen of another country..and i was just curious as to how this would work.
Answer:
i am american and live in denmark. i am married to a dane.
i still have my american citizenship and danish one takes 3 years but i dont have to take it. i cant have 2 citizenships here though. every country is different.
i do get the go vernment benefits.example.. medical free, schooling free, maternity leave for one year paid, 5 weeks paid vacation, if i want a credit card, car, house etc...i can apply or buy one with no problem. i do have a work and residence permit visa because i am married to a dane.
it just takes time to figure it out and every country is different. i would decide what country u like, and look or call the embassy on immigration issues and visas and what u need to do. that is the only way to find out.
as for taxes i cant be double taxed here. but other countries may be different, yet i do still have to file with the US but not pay in cause i pay taxes here. and i had lots of debts in the states.still do.
but it does take a long time to be a citizen of another country.
call the us embassy for good advice
Well, the only way you could get citizenship in England, would be to marry someone. It's very difficult to get English citizenship any other way. And it is also very difficult to get a work permit or stay there longer than a tourist visa, which is using your passport. The taxes over there are tremendous and if you did get a job over there, you would have to pay income taxes just like everybody else. You wouldn't be using government benefits really if you had a job over there because you would have money from the job. You can't just work any old job over there either. You have to have a highly specialized skill that a British company or the government would want to allow you to work there such as science researchers, professors, doctors, trade lawyers, nurses etc. If you aren't working in the USA at all for a tax year then you would file your taxes and indicate that you made no income, therefore not have to pay any taxes. If you want to live in England when you're older, you better start flirting with the English blokes now so you will have an easier time getting settled there. Just kidding of course.
If we don't get our politicians to fix this problem, in about 25 years, we are all gonna think we're living and working in a foreign country - right here in the U.S.
The best way to move to another country is either to spend a year of your university education with another school in a foreign country or to get skills that are in demand and make one valuable abroad. Examples might be an Engineering degree, IT or healthcare profession.
You would still be responsible for any debts you had incurred while in the U.S.
How taxes work...there's no one rule, however, you would have to pay taxes in a foreign country just like any citizen there. Would you still have to pay U.S. taxes? That depends. You might have to file paperwork saying that you were severing financial ties to the U.S. in order to get out of paying any U.S. taxes. You would still be able to retain you U.S. citizenship though, but you might not be able to get certain benefits, until you return.
Despite what you might hear, foreigners coming to the U.S., to work undergo a lengthy and expensive process to stay permanently. Often times, things are reciprocal so if its difficult for someone from say England to work in the U.S. then British authorities will make it difficult for an American to work and move to England.
Moving around is a great idea, you will give perspective to your life. In the U.S. we have a very limited view of the world.
You will see that most people aren't that much different from us.
You could do that if you have a skill that they could use. In some countries they prefer to give jobs to their own citizens first. You will not get benifits unless you work in their country for years and get social security when you are of the right age. Some countries it is age 55 or 60.Most offten you must marry someone from that country to be a citizen and that also takes time.
