Ok this really makes me mad?

Whenever I tell people that I'm an American they give me an odd look , it really irritates me when people say that I'm not an american because my parents came over (legally may I add) from Mexico
I'm just as much an American as anyone else
I was born in California, I've been speaking almost nothing but English since I was 3
so wft?

Answer:
Those people are really ignorant and racist because of the fact that the associate all Mexicans (Americans, legal, illegal) to illegal immigration.

You just have to be proud of who you are, and you don't have to prove to people how much of an American you are compared to the white Americans.

I am also American of Mexican decent (I was born in Chicago) and people assume I was born in Mexico, or are shocked when they hear how well I speak English.
What is more shocking to them is when I mention (somehow) that I attend the University of Madison.

It just doesn't need to be that way.
Sounds like you're dealing with a lot of jealousy! Or racism!
Sounds like you are just going to have to get over it. If you let it bother you, they win.
Hey,they just be hatin'... ignore demdey really dumb to say dat.
true, there are a lot of stereotypes

i'm with you on that one
that should piss you off. sorry to hear your being treated that way :(
Would be great if you learn Spanish.
So you would be able to communicate with us Mexicans from Mexico who were born in Mexico,
recuerda que Somos Raza como sea...
Dumb tradition in USA that you're supposed to say where your ancestors came from, and not where you came from.

Instead of saying just "I'm an American" give the info: "I'm an American born in Los Angeles County." [I was born in Los Angeles County; you should use the county you were born in, LOL]

Earlier today I thanked my gramps for my permanent tan. I still like it.
Do not let what others think bother you, as long as you know who you are, happy of who you are and proud of what you are, the rest does not matter.People will always judge, it's up to you to stand up for yourself and not let it bother you.
fuk what others say.

you are who you perceive you are, not others!!

and speak any damn language you wish!!!
That's because a majority of Mexican immigrants choose to say they are Mexican-Americans and if you are not they are confused, but yes you are just as much an American as anyone else who is American or chooses to call them selves that
Do you have a strong accent?
With the strong attention being paid to immigration right now, that can and will happen.
No matter what, you can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.
I have no Idea, if your parents came here legally then welcome. Glad to have you as my neighbor any day of the week. Also I would like to thank you and your family for learning the language and doing your best to assimilate to the American way, while enriching our culture with what you bring. You are as much an American as any of us. I am sorry if people treat you poorly for something you can not control.

I think the fact that there are those that do not migrate the legal way, and that bothers some people to a point in which they may feel that the majority are illegally here. It is sad, and I am sorry for those of you who are suffering for that. Every American came here the same way you did, some earlier, some later.
Relax,,you have nothing to prove to anyone,,,,
GET A LIFE
Just smile and get on with your life.
Dam girl you go!! I totally agree w/ you! Alot of people call everybody with brown skin mexican.. We WERE born in the US! that makes us as much american as anyone else! Im very proud of my mexican heritage.. i totally LOVE the food and some of the nice tradition but i would never betray my country. Im love this country cuz this IS my country!... so if we're mexican cuz our parents are mexican then NOBODY in this country is american... why u may ask,,, but the 1st settlers came from europe so that means their from french, irish, british or any other nation... people should quit all this BS that if ur have mexican heritage ur a total mexican cuz im as AMERICAN as the american flag.. i LOVE this country..
I'm Mexican-American as well, born in Nor-Cal. I was raised in a farming community where I felt discriminated against once or twice but I didn't let that stop me. I graduated from UC Davis and went back with my diploma to one ignorant white male that had put me down as a kid and it made me feel real good about myself. Overall, you can't judge people based on ethnicity. Fools come in every color so don't give up on anyone before getting to know them.
i have no clue, i live in California too and I've never thought someone who is Hispanic and speaks perfect English isn't American. i know they are american.

and I've never ran into anyone who gave Hispanic people weird looks either, unless they could barely speak English at all and claimed to be American.
then that's when I'd give a weird look.

maybe your being paranoid or maybe its just the area in California your living in. but i live in southern Cali and everyone is nice to everyone regardless of their ethnicity
Yes you are an American and your an asset to our society.
People who say African American
or Mexican American
or Asian American
are defeating the simple all AMERICAN !
Divided we fall
together we STAND ~
I am Italian American with a strong foreign accent
I don't care what people say .
If your parents came here legally, and you were born here, then you are American. Welcome to the minority !!
If these people think that you are not an American ,they are being very ignorant. But you should be able to speak your own mother- tongue .Being an American doesn't mean you have to forget your root.English is not my language.I learned my mother-tongue first before I started others, and I speak and write three now.
I'm very sorry to hear that you have to face this. I sure it is true that people just see your skin color and think oh no another illegal. I now it shouldn't be this way but , I hate to say this so many people are not like you and your family. They come illegally into this country and don't get legal. And right now Americans are in need of jobs that illegals have taken. I'm glad you are here and I am sorry for what you go thought. I just hope we can stop so many illegals from invading American. I think there needs to be a limit on the number of people that come to this country each year.
That would annoy me, also. Why don't they accept that you're 100% American?

Alakran, shut up you little gay racist - Cierre el hocico
*shrugs* I get that a lot. People usually ask me where I'm from (I have a strange American/Australian/British/As... accent which changes depending on what words I use) and I look asian (although it usually takes a few guesses to get exactly where my parents are born). I tend to say where I'm born and state where my parents were born. People usually think I'm from New Zealand. It doesn't bother me.. I'm used to it.
