How Do Mexicans get such ridiculous from seemingly normal names?

For instance, Jose becomes Chepe, Eduardo is Lalo,Gabreiel becomes Gabi, ?

It's to throw off the INS.
Because Mexicans are wierdos.
... The same way English speaking people "minimize" theirs:

Richard = "Dick"
Robert = "Bob"
Joseph = "Joe"

I would suggest you try learning a bit of Spanish. Things make much more sense if you know a bit about where they come from. For instance, I'm a Latin instructor (as in Ancient Roman language, not Central America) and there are a lot of things that make more sense when you understand their Latin, Greek, or Germanic roots. Flip though some books at Barnes and Nobles or Borders or wherever. You'd be surprised what you can pick up. :)
