i entered uk 30 years ago using my usa passport.the stamp is "right to remain indefinetly".i dont remember ever getting a letter. to show my visa entry conditions. what is this about ,its never happened before.
Answer:
If you have ILR, you are entitled to claim benefits if you need them. I guess you might have issues because your passport is so old and is presumably expired. Because of changes in regulations over the years, the benefit people might be expecting to see different documentation which was not issued thirty years ago. If they continue to be awkward, try getting help from a Citizens Advice Bureau.
To make life simpler in the future, you might consider applying for UK citizenship, but it is not necessary.
There are no restrictions attached to an ILR endorsement.
ILR - means Indefinite Leave To Remain. There are no conditions to that, you are entitled to live here permanently, claim benefits, do what Brits do ( without having a Brit Passport ) but also means staying in the line when you come through to Immigration! You are also legible to get Brit Passport any time.
I can understand why the Housing Benefits are a bit "eefy" about that stamp, it can be awkward to read, and, as it is not a green vignette saying ILR on it, anyone may wonder what that is, unless you are Immigration Officer - which gets to see hundreds of them a week.
