Why do people celebrate Columbus Day?

I live in New Mexico and because of the large native population here we don't usually even recognize Columbus Day. You are totally right about Columbus, it is a bogus holiday.

Because he discovered the "New World" but hence he was trying to just discover more Gold for Espana and a secret trade route to Asia. Just watched a bio on the old guy, he was a crook!
Because for some for some of us it's a day off . The actually meaning has faded into department store sales and actually he was lost so it's not really as great discovery as those who latter followed on different routes.
Another excuse to get off work, have a parade and drink excessively?
Italians celebrate Columbus Day because he was Italian. It is there version of St. Patrick's Day I guess. Also, why should we celebrate the 4th of July when the people who won that war destroyed natives as well?
He wasn't in the business of colonizing or killing, just of exploring.

For them, Columbus day is called Dia del la Raza, the Day of the Race. Spain also celebrated Columbus Day until 1958. Then the name was changed to Day of the Hispanics.
I don't see any reason to celebrate October 12th, the day Columbus landed here in 1492. I wish we would bring back Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays as holidays.

I wonder why they still do myself since it's basicly been proven he didn't. We still do groundhog day and he's not right all the time either. Call it American tradition and deal with it. I don't think anyone is forcing you to march in a parade or do anything you don't want to on that day. All it means to me is sales at the store, no mail and the banks closed.

Everyone knows that there were people in the Americas when Columbus arrived. His own diary records the meeting. Therefore, it is not his voyage to American that we celebrate. Vikings, Irish sailors and even Chinese probably sailed to America.
The reason we celebrate Columbus Day is because of the way he RECORDED his voyage. He recorded the journey more carefully than any previous sailor. He kept a careful diary, drew reasonably accurate maps and explained how other sailors could REPLICATE the journey. This made trans-Atlantic trade possible on a scale that was unknown before his voyage and still benefits everyone reading this.
Furthermore, most of the Native Americans that died because of the arrival of the Europeans died from SMALL POX not violence against them. The Europeans did not understand how small pox is spread so they can not be held accountable for the results. The violence committed against Native Americans has been exaggerated for political purposes.
