PLEASE HELP! Do any of you live in one country but work in another on a daily basis?!?
If you live right next to the U.S./Canada border, it shouldn't really be too much of a problem to live in one country but work in another at least as far as distance & mileage are concerned, am I right in assuming so?
Once you get to the border, what is the official procedure like?
Do you get your passport stamped every single time you cross the border?
If so, how long does it take to get everything in order so you can get to work or home on time?
Thanks for all your helpful & valuable insight!
Answer:
I did that for about a year. It was horrible! Give yourself plenty of time to cross the border. Once the border patrol realize you're a regular you'll get stopped all the time for detailed searches, drug dogs and they'll even x ray your car. They made me late for work whenever they possibly could. Sometimes the guy at the booth I was at would just stand and talk about hockey with the guy the next booth over while holding my passport. Make sure your boss knows the situation.
Also, keep your car as empty as possible. The less they have to search, the better. You'll also be frequently asked to show proof of all kinds of things the average person doesn't carry with them. I've been asked for the title to my car, insurance rider (Not just the card) and I've had to fill out forms for my car several times. It was very annoying. Better practice some relaxation techniques.
When you coming back into the U.S. by land, you will be inspected by a Customs and Border Protection Officer. He/She will ask you basic questions, like what was your purpose of visit to Canada? What are you bringing back? Sometimes you will be selected for a secondary inspection. During that inspection you will get off your car and the officer will check your vehicle. Must of the time the inspection procedure would take about 30 to 90 seconds .
