Is life so horrible that...?

you complain that you have to press 1 for English? Do you often get depressed or suicidal because you have to press 1 for English? Do you have too much time to worry about things like that?

Just wondering how something like that can be used as an argument...

Your thoughts please...

Answer:
The U.S. does not have an official language. Therefore no one, English-speaking or otherwise, is entitled to hear their native language exclusively or as a "default." I feel grateful that I happen to live in a country where my native language is the most common one. Many people from other countries have to put up with new governments taking over and establishing new official languages, some even forbid them to use their native language in public!
Is life so horrible that you would be driven to ask this question?

People of the same country have to at the very least...have one thing in common, and that should be language- the basis of our intermingling- this country should accomodate english only- other languages should be offered as an additional step, and english should be automatic....it's a matter of principle, thats why your at a loss!

Your bias is in equal contrast...in other words ...you'll never understand!
life isnt's horrible, but wtf, we shouldn't have to press anything to continue in english. and if they're here then they should understand english enough to listen to an english recording
The point is that the USA is an English-speaking nation, whether the illegal criminal invaders like it or not. We shouldn't HAVE to press anything for English, it should be automatic. If you need a different language, you should leave until you can speak English.

Where did we lose you?
Nicole has it right
a private business can do what they want and solicit business with whomever they want. If you don't like it then find some place that doesn't do it, if everyone does it, then I am sure there are plenty of things more important in life than someone obsessing about someone else and what is their business and none of yours. WE as Americans are too nosey for our own good.
Horrible, depressed, suicidal?? .no, of course not.
Annoying, yes, of course. But then so is a mosquito bite.
Does it honestly keep you up at night that it bothers us?? Why do YOU care that we care??? Does it not bother you...you seem to be an english speaking person. You seem to be using it as an argument...right?

We have people that speak dozens of languages in this country...why don't we have buttons for everyone??

What really bothers me.is when I walk into a church in the U.S.and this was in northern California...and couldn't find a single person that spoke English.

It's not a matter of being "nosey"...the U.S. is OUR BUSINESS.
OK life is not that bad to press one for english but... The problem is that the person you talk to after you press one can barely speak english that is my issue with the whole thing!! Yes english should be our national language! I also think these companies should not go over seas with these jobs just so I can understand WTF the person is saying.
The agency you are trying to address, serves more people than those fluent in English, if it is to much of a problem for you (to press 1 for English) don't do it just hang up.
A country where there is more than one language to be learned is a great country. What do we call bilingual people, trilingual people?. Amazing, right. If only I had learned how to speak Mandarin when I was young (sorry Grandpa). Why people worry about press 1 or 2 for different languages. Why not purposely try to press 2 and learn the Spanish language (or any other languages that is no 2). There is nothing wrong to know more languages. BTW, English is my second language, but I want to learn Spanish as my third.
Pressing 1 for English isn't really what is bothering people, It's the added cost that pressing 2 for another language that is tacked on to everything.

Do a little research on what mandatory dual languages has been costing us.
I could care less if I have to press one for English or whatever. Seeing systems are so interconnected between the US and Canada you are going to have the press one feature because of bilingualism in Canada.

Why should the government determine what language is used? Shouldn't the free market determine what language people use? Do we really want the government to control our culture in such a way?
I recently called a government agency and the message was in spanish for an entire minute before the English option...made me wish I was hearing the press 1 for English.
it is annoying, but then so is dealing with an automated touchkey machine in the first place. it gives you 5 or 6 options and if you push something wrong it says "that is not a valid option. goodbye". It is so obnoxious..i just want to talk to a human being for chrissake! also the english/spanish thing is sometimes very useful. my credit card company outsources its english call center to India. so, if I press 1 for english I get some jerk in Delhi or Mumbai with horrible static, an extremely thick accent, and they are rude and accusatory. whereas if I press 2 for spanish, I get a nice chicana girl located in Chicago, absolutely no static (since it is only a few hundred miles away) who speaks english clear as a bell and quickly helps me resolve my problem.

How's that for irony...to be able to get my business done in english, i have to press the option for spanish...strange world..
yeah.what happened to its a free country.
or freedom of speech? its not like its freedom of english speech right?..so if you don't like it complain to the companies that make you waste 1 second of your life pressing 1 for english.and stop those people who only hire you if your bilingual....

ps: im not saying it should silly! i agree with you...pressing 1 for english shouldn't give anyone headaches!
No,it's the principal. We speak English here, our country was founded on it and we shouldn't have to press a button to hear something in our language. It's disrespectful and down right anti American.
Its a little irritation that becomes a big irritation when it happens over and over again. Why can't one option be the default and only one language have to push a button? My choice is English as the default. I do not become depressed or suicidal though, just irritated out the wazoo.
the problem and the aggravation comes from the fact that in the united states English is the language not Spanish.
if you want to live here and work here and do business here learn the language.
DO NOT MAKE THE ENGLISH SPEAKING CITIZENS HAVE TO PRESS ONE TO HEAR THE PROMPTS IN OUR OWN LANGUAGE!
personally I'm sick and tired of having to comply to the wants of the wet backs that trot over here and want us to comply with their language demands.
if they can't learn the language stay in Mexico!
Personally I don't care about that. What I do care about are the people that feel that they can come here illegally and be entitled to things that are only given to citizens and legal residents. They have the balls to come here as a criminal, and then wonder why they are "looked down upon".

Legal or deport. . .
I hear different languages everywhere I go. If the public had to learn all the different dialects spoken there would be real chaos. It discriminates against English speaking people. There is not one good reason to make Spanish more important than any other language. English is the language here and all Americans should speak our language. The only legislation we need is to make learning English part of citizenship. I am sick of legislation that would enable a second language.
These people are bigots and afraid of change which inevitable. You hear conservative radio jocks talking non-stop about the "illegal invasion" of Mexicans. That just sounds like fear and mass hysteria to me.
I think you have missed the point. We should not have to accommodate foreigners. They do not accommodate us when we travel to their countries.
Becareful.. next thing you know people will be complainging they want the taco bell menu translated to english.it's not just spanish that is being spoken and the truth of the matter is people focus only on the Mexicans. Also this is just a question.. if Cristopher columbus was a spanish explorer didnt he speak spanish?? maybe i should waste 5 points on that one.
You are trying to trivialize and inflame those who have a problem with the fact that there is even an option to have to listen to another language other than English. Who the heck are you anyway? Are you a Mexican? Or are you a white bleeding heart liberal? Is this America or is this Mexico? The language issue is just one more way our government and apparently people like you, who have no pride in being a citizen of the USA, stick it to us and make us realize our laws, our Constitution, our American history have no value anymore and we might as well all just chuck it all away and have no pride or values or morals, and just do as we please with no consequences or standards of right and wrong to live up to. You make me sick with your lazy, stupid attitude.
I guess they're too lazy to move their fingers to press 1.
no its not but what is horrible is when the rep picks up the phone and you can barely understand them. This isnt just mexicans this all broken english speaking people..try understanding broken english..then you get frustrated cause you cant understand them and they have the nerve to get mad at you. Fine I'll press 1 doesnt bother me but why the hell do I have to figure out what the hell there saying to me!!! America is english speaking..
