Travelling Abroad with a Criminal Record?

Thinking about the future and travelling. I was in prison for assault and have been on tag but hope this won't stay with me for too long.

I know that I can't go abroad while I'm out on license but after that I want to travel. I know that for places like USA and Australia a criminal record won't go down too well but for how long will that be taken into account? Are there any countries outside the EU where this wouldn't matter.

If you've applied for a visa because of something like this - what is the procedure like?

Answer:
Bad news I am afraid. You will find it extremely difficult to go to any country for which you need a visa. Every country in the world has more of it`s own criminals than it knows what to do with ! They certainly don`t want them from somewhere else as well. Assault is a serious offence in any country, so your chances are very slim. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you did ask.
hate to tell u i have an american work visa and u will not get one for atleast the next 5-10 years , id be surprised if u get one for anywhere ,Things are really sttrict now maybe a couple of years ago u might of but there is a strict criteria now
sorry
If you have a criminal record (in any country), ANY country (including your own nation) has the right to refuse you entry at a border point.

If the crime is a felony, you WILL be refused (although not necessarily by your home country, depending on whether you've already 'paid' for your crime). If it is a misdemeanor, you MAY be refused.

It doesn't mean that they will actually refuse you ... but they have the right to do so. If you travel, you're taking your chances on them letting you in - every time you cross a border.
Americans have laws against moral torptitude. Before you leave home make sure you have your travel papers. It would not hurt to try and see what happens
hi my boyfriend has got a record for assault and he has even served time in prison its the same fing even if your out on tag the bad fing is you wont be able to go places like america where dey really strict on that.... ma man has turned around to me so many times saying he wishes he didnt have dat record he cud be america workin or wateva and where eva dey let you in den your lucky...gud luk anyway
It shouldn't be a big problem. When i apply for a visa, I just say NO to any criminal request question. I don't think they even bother to check.
Mind you...I do not have a record so...
