Is the immigration debate really just a forum for xenophobic imbeciles to air their bigotry?

Lets face it, if immigration really was a big deal, why didn't the Republicans who are "demanding" a solution for it, "demand" Bush and his Republican congress take action on it only a year ago?

You all are decendent from immigrants; unless your living on a reservation, that is.

Answer:
A country cannot be both a republic and an empire. Either the US unilaterally withdraws from all foreign bases or you can start counting down to rise of North American fascism. It already came to power under the neoliberals and the executive expanded his powers in a way most reminiscent of Julius Caesar (without the talent, intelligence or popularity) and Hitler.

The manipulation of the immigration issue is just a way to evade the Iraq issue. The outbursts of xenophobia are a reflection of the bigotry spoused by politicians and the media alike. They are not interested in having a real democracy, and the US pop falls for it every time.

When i started asking how people felt about the SS attack on immigrants on MAYDAY and they retorted in some backward hillbilly lexicon, i realized: it is just as in Germany. Nobody cares until it is them who are taken to the oven.

I think a better question is, what does the latest surge of xenophobia reflect about the educational standards in the US? Well, my friend, it reflects poorly.

ANd by the way, this whole business of who is a legal immigrant and who is not. The US invaded Mexico and took half the country away... that was illegal. The murder of the American Indian was certainly illegal. Restricting the movement of people is ILLEGAL. SO please, go check your UN charter if you know how to read. And remember, the day all US soldiers are in the US, then we will talk about keeping foreigners out of the US. well, at least East of the Mississippi, the rest is ours.
It really is a big deal.
I don't know about any of those big words, but I think we should put a tax on all foreigners living abroad!
Yes...it is. But it's also an opportunity for those who are not xenophobic and not bigoted to have their say.

We live in a democracy, let's face it. Everyone has the right to voice his/her opinion. And the majority will rule.
Well, my grandmother actually came here legally, so what's your point?

Plus, you are showing your ignorance. Native Americans emigrated here across the Bering Strait from Russia thousands of years ago
Try visiting southern California, and you will see what a big deal it is. And I was decended from LEGAL immigrants.
Didn't you see the news story where they have found that there was even an earlier people in North America before the Indians?

Anyway, history is written by the victors. Right now the Europeans that took America are in charge. Bush can't seem to see that the drip drip drip of illegal mexicans is going to change the picture pretty soon... and then the mexicans will be the victors, and we will all be having babies at 13.
Actually, immigration is indeed an issue. But not for the reasons you may think.

Illegal immigrants, people who are in this country ILLEGALLY, are providing big business with CHEAP labor so that they do not HAVE to provide Americans with a living wage, or ANY benefits.

THAT is why the Republicans have done NOTHING of substance to address this issue. Big Business.
*******

For the posters who are posting things like, "Oh, big deal, even the Native Americans immigrated here"...
HELLO? Native Americans did not commit genocide like white people did when THEY came here. Native Americans shared the goodies with the living creatures which were aleady here. And respected them. How patently absurd for anyone to compare white people arriving in this country with Native Americans arriving in this country.

You people KILL me.
NO it is for Americans to discuss and share facts concerning the illegal immigration crisis.
Using words like xenophobe, imbecile, and bigot will only breed fighting. Debate is when people intelligently and respectfully discuss issues and ideas.

Both Republicans and Democrats have been pushing bills for the past couple of years, at least. The probem is, neither Dem or Rep congress members care what the American public thinks. I think it is an important lesson for all Americans, regardless of views, to realize just how important voting is, and how important it is to know the candidates and what they do or don't stand for.
Yes, most of us are descendants from immigrants. Mine came here in the mid 1600's from Ireland and Wales. But, a lot came here in the 1800's and 1900's, legally. They learned the language, worked hard, paid taxes and became citizens. The illegals we are concerned with today want the cake first, without doing any of the work. That is why we are angry and want them to be deported. They want to come here, get our welfare and food stamps dollars, they want free health care and who pays for all of that? You and I do, through taxes. I resent that, and you should too!
The majority of people don't have anything against legal immigration they have a problem with illegal immigration. There is a huge difference.
Yes I realize that the people who came over on the mayflower didn't go through legal red tape like today's legal immigrats do. However times have changed at one time there weren't to many laws for people who drive cars. With the increase of cars laws had to be made to make it safe for all.
Just like laws on immigration needed to be passed to make it safe for all.
NO it's not bigotry, It necessary.
I am a descendant of legal law abiding immigrants that came to this nation, adapted to it,learned the English language and didnt demand that the USA change to suit them. We became Americans the legal way . We fought in the wars and we worked hard to keep America free. This has nothing to do with race. You are the racists here not Legal Americans. And I am not a hyphenated American. I am a proud AMERICAN.
That is true, but there's a huge difference:
My dad's grandparents came through Ellis Island from Italy in the late 1890's. My mother came here LEGALLY from France in 1955; she had to be immunized, she had to learn English, and she had to be sponsored.

We should never have changed those rules, we wouldn't have the problems to the degree the are today.
You are so off base it's beyond my comprehension. First and foremost, this isn't a political debate. I know to some of you who insist on making everything right wing or left wing, it looks like one, but it's not. Sure, there'll be a lot of political positioning using immigration but it's still not a political issue. This is a matter of enforcement - plain and simple. Unfortunately, we've set a precedent and now we're painted into a corner that we're having a hard time getting out of. But you have to remember, that there are a lot of people between the law enforcement people and the Senate/Congress/President who call the shots. These middle-men are the ones we need to be focusing on.
The other area where you're so obviously ignorant is in your allusion to the Native Americans. All Native Americans are also descended from immigrants. This is common knowledge although, it's not commonly acknowledged.
There's also a paradox in your question. You used the word "imbeciles" and then talk about their "bigotry." I'm not sure you can understand the incongruity here but I'll bet everyone else can.
In yuma az mexicans don't have to have insurance, that means they can total your car, drive over the boarder and you get screwed. A couple years ago a bunch of illegals came over the boarder and during a high speed chase killed a 16 year old girl, illegals over load the hospitals so thier children can get benefits from hard working, tax paying, law abiding American citizens like me,(I personally pay $1,400.00 a month in taxes)
I would tell you to pack your sh!t and move to mexico, but thier immigration laws are way more strict than ours, the only difference is, they enforce them.
I saw all of them marching in the streets and waiving Mexican flags. If you want to call them xenophobic imbeciles and bigots that's your business. I would not go that far.
The debate is extremely important since the majority of Americans HATE having illegal aliens ruining our country.
Playing the race card is slack. It is a big deal whether or not someone is legal. The illegals had nerve to march and protest when they are the ones breaking the law. Why should they get special treament when sooooooooooo
many others came to this great country legally. Republicans didn't do anything but neither did demcrats. No one did or has done anything. My decendents did it the legal way.
You are ignoring one very big issue. The law. In that way, you are just like the illegals themselves. Don't seem to care about abiding by the laws, but always looking for some sign of racism. Funny, the people who are the quickest to cry racism are usually the biggest racists themselves. Maybe because they are so familiar with the mindset.
I like how you use BIG words to apply your ignorant opinion.

If you're a tax payer, and you're paying for these illegals to have their anchor babies here (and other free healthcare, housing, and food) but can't get assistance for YOUR family if you ever need it, you WOULD see why it's a big deal.
Would some1 pls tell me why it's bigotry to desire that the law be enforced?
And your blanket statement about all of us are descended from immigrants is untrue. My ancestors were colonists - there is a difference.
I kept hearing about all those jobs Americans just won’t do. We’re never really told what they are, but I guess we should be happy they’re getting done and stop complaining about all the negative aspects of having twenty million illegal aliens in our midst.

Perhaps we should just accept the idea that 25 American citizens are going to continue to be killed every day by illegals -- half of them by drunk drivers -- because it’s a small price to pay to get all those jobs done.

We should get used to the idea that nearly four million children of illegals are filling our public schools, and that more than 300,000 illegal aliens are serving time in our prisons. There are another 640,000 illegals who should be in prison but aren’t because they are fugitives. We’re not paying to incarcerate them, so that’s a plus, but unfortunately they are probably the ones responsible for killing those 25 Americans every day. And, of course, we are getting those jobs done.

We really shouldn’t complain about the resurgence of heretofore eradicated diseases, including Tuberculosis and the plague. You’ve probably heard that bedbugs are also making a comeback. But it’s okay, because we’re getting all those jobs done.

I guess we should be more than willing to pay the cost for illegals to flood our hospital emergency rooms for free service; and it’s the least we can do to declare their babies born on our soil as American citizens. What else could a compassionate society do for people doing all those jobs for us?

Americans should be happy to press one for English and to sort through multiculti instructions written in Spanish (and sometimes other languages) in order to find the English directions. But again, who else is going to do all those jobs? Snobby, self-indulgent Americans? I don’t think so.

I have to confess that I was less than thrilled recently to see my local super market put up new signs over their food aisles directing customers to the item of their choice in both English and Spanish. I found myself wondering how long it would take me to figure out in Mexico City that “Jalapeño” means “Pepper.” But after I thought about all those jobs lazy, spoiled Americans (apparently including me) simply won’t do, I realized it was well worth whatever inconvenience I might experience.|

To tell you the truth, I was at a loss to figure out which jobs the invading hordes of illegals actually were doing that my fellow Americans and I won’t do. Oh, I know the usual answers, but those don’t seem to be the jobs I see them doing. In fact, I see them roofing houses and making good money at it. I see them working hard at more and more skilled jobs that people I know personally would gladly do.
You know how to word your questions excellent and point out so many points withOUT being arrogrant or acting like a 2 year old.

I tend to usually just agree with you!
Unlawful Entry is a CRIME. Zero tolerance for immigration-law violators! No amnesty, no "stealth-amnesty." No "change of status," marriage fraud, "exceptional leave to remain," no "Temporary Protected Status." If you break the law, depart or be deported. Illegal aliens kill more US citizens each year than the war in Iraq has killed in four years. Apologists for illegal immigration like to paint it as a victimless crime. But in fact, illegal immigration causes substantial harm to American citizens and legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable sectors of our population--the poor, minorities, and children. Additionally, job competition by waves of illegal immigrants willing to work at substandard wages and working conditions depresses the wages of American workers, hitting hardest at minority workers and those without high school degrees. Illegal immigration also contributes to the dramatic population growth overwhelming communities across America--crowding school classrooms, consuming already limited affordable housing, and straining precious natural resources like water, energy, and forestland. Taxpayers are being forced to pay for the free health care, education, and other welfare programs being given to illegal aliens; Those tax dollars could be given back to U.S. taxpayers or used to keep our borders secure; They may be here illegally, but they sure know how to "work the system" to collect "free" medical care, "free" education, "free" food, Section 8 housing vouchers and other housing assistance, and hundreds of other social services. It costs citizens additional hundreds of billions of tax dollars at every level: local, state, and federal. It gobbles up billions of our charitable contributions. And much of that money ends up siphoned out of our economy and into offshore accounts. Illegal aliens, over half of whom work "under the table" with neither job nor income reported (nor taxed), are not counted as employed or unemployed. But some of those day-labor and off-the-books "job-lets" would be "real" jobs - available to American citizen job-seekers - if employment regulations were enforced. Illegal aliens can get away with tax evasion, et al., which citizens cannot. In short, we have too many workforce entrants and too few jobs created. The ratio works out to roughly 7-10 workforce entrants per job created. If all illegal aliens depart or are deported, all legal immigration halted, and all temporary employment visas abolished, we still have a problem with more US-born workforce entrants than new jobs created. Illegal immigration damages our country and our citizens every day at every level. And not even the attacks of 2/26 and 9/11 have awakened many Americans to the vast dangers illegal immigration poses to our selves, our families, our communities, our society, our values, our principles, our civilization. Zero Tolerance for Immigration-Law Violators! We must remember the lessons of 2/26, 9/11, and the costs we bear every single day. God Bless the U S A !
