How to work/study in the States if I am a green card holder who 'sneaked out' via Canada in 99 (long story)?

My family emigrated to the States (holding green cards) in 1999 from Hong Kong. I was 19 and my father somehow wanted (and convinced) me to finish my degree in HK and eventually I left US after two months via Canada. Until recently, I thought this is entirely proper. I have never returned to USA after 1999 and now it occured to me that I really wanted to further my study or perhaps even work in the States and I think the arrangement aforementioned may not be entirely proper, now that I understand a bit more about the situation. What are my options?

Answer:
The most important factor in your case is not how you left the US, but that you left so long ago that your green card is no longer valid. If you want to return to live, work and/or study in the US, you must apply for a new immigrant visa based on a new petition by one of the family members who is still living there.
