Buy cans of mace or pepper spray. Strategically hide a can in each room of your house (where the kids can't get at it) so if he surprises you in the laundry room or bathroom or kitchen you have some means of self-defense.

Contact the NRA and find a local organization that can train you to safely keep and use a firearm. If you live in a state that issues concealed carry permits (most do after a background investigation) get one. Buy a quality firearm from an experienced gun dealer. You don't need a cannon like a .357. A .32 or .38 revolver will do the job just fine. Take it to a range and practice. Carry it when out and about and vulnerable.
