How long do you have to wait after you get marry to apply for your green card?

Is there any thing else that i need to know before trying to apply

Answer:
6 months. I hate that rule, it should be 1 week.
You don't have to wait at all. Turn in your application. Keep in mind that once you get the card, you will be on probation for 3 years so if you get divorced between now and then, your application could be null and void. make sure your marriage certificates have no errors. You should be good to go. My experience is from 2003.
I want you to know that marrying for a green card is not legal except under certain regulations. Check up on this. Typically, this can take 3 years.
You can apply for the green card on the day you get married.
This card obtained by marriage must be renewed after two years, you must show proof that you are still married when the two years elapse.
I'm canadian married to a Us citizen. When I was still in canada, I had to wait for my K1-visa to cross the border, when I was in the states, I had to get married within 90 days.
In other words my K-1 visa was expiring after 90 days. I had to also apply for the I-485 (green card) before the 90 days expired. after that you just have to wait. And remember that you cannot leave the country until you get your permanent residency. But one thing you can do is apply for your employment authorization at the same time as your green card (about 185.00$) so that you can start your own life. If you want to take a vacation you can apply for an Advance Parole. which is another 175$ or close. In case of an emergency, you can have a pass quicker by calling the immigration center I believe. If you leave the coutry without a permission, they can refuse your entry because you will not have a valid visa. An employment authorization doesn't give you the right to travel. One more thing that I learn while going through the process, If you do get an employment authorization, you can then get adrivers license. Your drivers license will always expire at the same time as your status. So for example, if you are on a K1 Visa and you applied for a drivers license upon enterign the country, it expires in 90 days. So if you don't get The employment Authorization, you do not have the right to drive because you have no legal status. When you do, you can reapply for a License. And trust me you will not get aletter in the mail saying that your license is expiring soon at least not in Florida. The first time it happened to me, my husband caught the date on my license so went and renewed it with my EAD. The 2nd time well I received my green card 6 months before the expiration date of my EAD. It never occured to me that it was going to be the same this time. I got pulled over by the police for speeding and he told me that my license had expired. In one way I got lucky and the cops told me because If I would have been pulled over 2 weeks later or more I would maybe go to jail on a misdeamenor for driveing on a not valid license 4 months and up. Anyway I hope this helps. Good Luck
you dont have to wait..my hubby applied right after we got married ( not really right after but w / in a month.and he got his green card or alian card in 3-6 months..
