What do you think are some options for better immigration policy?

This should make everyone think, whether you are Democrat, Republican or Independent. After all of our tax dollars go to free medical, free education, free food, day care etc., etc., the cheap labor they provide (main pro-argument I keep hearing) is NOT cheap! It is costing Americans more than money to keep allowing this to go on.

Answer:
I agree whole heartidly with Ron Paul's 6-point plan on immigration reform.

-Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals.

-Enforce visa rules. Immigration officials must track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law. This is especially important when we recall that a number of 9/11 terrorists had expired visas.

-No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million people are in our country illegally. That’s a lot of people to reward for breaking our laws.

-No welfare for illegal aliens. Americans have welcomed immigrants who seek opportunity, work hard, and play by the rules. But taxpayers should not pay for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, and social services

-End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong.

-Pass true immigration reform. The current system is incoherent and unfair. But current reform proposals would allow up to 60 million more immigrants into our country, according to the Heritage Foundation. This is insanity. Legal immigrants from all countries should face the same rules and waiting periods.

Save our borders and our country. Vote for Ron Paul in 2008.
I think the recent bill was excellent. But due to emotional reasons and the stigma behind the word "amnesty", it didn't get through.
Enforce the laws that were created 20 years ago when mass amnesty was given.
Well lest see 78% of Americans according to a recent Gallup poll supported some way of a pathway to citizenship, either by a touch back to there home countrey or allowing them to say here. I'll let you read into the numbers.

I think enforcing our current one would work perfectly. I think disallowing illegal immagrints to live on welfare should be stopped(yes...thats right...its true)...I think they should finishing building the wall that was supposed to be built instead of delaying it. I think immagrints crossing the border should be given 3 verbal warnings to stop...after the third our border guards should be allowed to open fire. I truly do believe that. Because you never know if an illegal crossing the border is a terrorrist. I know I will recieve thumbs down for that...but oh well!

Pardon our border guards! they were doing there job!
Here is a analogy of what the issue is. A friend found it in a letter to the editor column.

SAY I BROKE INTO YOUR HOUSE A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials
in ages! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.

Her point:

Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.

Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder
to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.

Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests. Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.

But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors. I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest
(except for when I broke into your house).

According to the protesters:

You are Required to let me stay in your house You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan You are Required to Educate my kids You are Required to provide other benefits to me & to my family (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).

If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your
house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.

It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house And what a deal it is for me!

I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.

Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE! so you can communicate with me. And don't forget to make sure your forms are in MY language - I need to understand them...

Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America .
The only option is for the government to enforce all of the provisions in the first amnesty act called "The 1986 Immigration and Amnesty Act" In that act it was provided that after the illegals were made legal anyone else comming after that time would not be allowed to remain here illegally. Also anyone who hired illegal aliens after that time would be sanctioned fined and if they continued to hire ppeople without checking their immigration status then that business owner would have his business confiscated and he would be thrown in jail. Also they were supposed to increase the amount of the border patrol and to immediately deport people caught crossing the border. Also the amount of people seeking assylum would be decreased until the country had time to absorb all the immigrants that had come here.

None of these laws were enforced and so that is why the american people rose up against their elected officials and demanded a "NO" answer to the new immigration bill that was just presented by the president to the congress.

Also I agree with you that the only arguement that the pro amnesty lobby has is that they erroneously claim that illegals provide cheap labor. yes it is only cheap for the companies who hire them such as roofers landscapers construction contractors and food proceesing plants.

As for the rest of us we pay dearly and for that cheap labor in the higher tasxes we pay to cover their use of social services such as free breakfast and lunch for their illegal kids in our schools. They also in the suburbs do not pay school taxes to send their children to school as many families live in one house and as many as 15 kids form the same house can be going to the school and only one family pays for the school taxes. Also for the people who say that the illegals pay taxes yes some of them are paying taxes if they are working on the books with a social security number but they usually earn very little money and have many dependants and so therefore they get an extra $6,000.00 prr year returned to them in what is known as the federal governments "EARNED INCOME TAX CRDEIT"

This means that if you have an American family of four who earns $40,000.00 a year that head of household is not elegible for the earned income tax credit. But if an illegal alien family of four earns $36,000.00 a year then that illegal person will get an extra $6,000.00 refund from the IRS. Which is more than all the taxes that they paid on their small salary of $36,000.00. So this makes the effective take home pay for the year more for the illegal alien earning $4,000.00 less than the American citizen tax payer.

So the only fair option is to secure the border and then hunt out all the illegal aliens and deport them and their anchor babies to their country of origin. It doedsn't matter how long this takes. Even if it takes 10 to 15 years to round them all up. Also immediately they can deport any one who commits a crime murder rape drunk driving involving death and accidents etc. The immigration status of such persons can be determined and if they are illegal they can be deported.

Those are some of the options that can be taken.
The best option is to come up with a fair, compassionate, and rational system to deal with immigration and borders. What is NEEDED is a system to deal with immigration and borders. A good system preferably, but a system. Then, if it needs changing, the system can adapt. But, first, it has to exist. Our non system has predictably been a disaster
