When did the term "illegal immigrant" for come about and what was the idea of restricting immigration? (US)

I think they wanted to monitor and/or restrict immigration based on a lot of criteria such as 1)they're ability to work and support themselves so they don't rely on government assistance; 2) they're background - like to see how mentally stable they are and whether or not they are likely to murder someone for example; and 3) their medical history, to make sure they are not bringing any foreign diseases into the country that the US might not know how to deal with yet. I'm only guessing at these but if I was the government, I would be as careful about who I let in the country as who I would be letting into my own house.
Immigration has always been restricted. From the first colonies on.
It's a self explanatory term. An immigrant arriving here illegally = illegal immigrant. Restricting immigration is practiced by all nations in the world, for different reasons: to control crime, to prevent overpopulation, to help ward off disease (ex: the current TB scare. It's more frequent in less well off countries such as Mexico).
i think it started they say because of drugs maybe. um... Americans are greedy and dont want to share. but if this is home work you'd better get more answers then mine. i would look it up else where.
Illegal is a term meaning against the law.It applies in every country when you do not have permission to be there.
they "took are jobs" which is wrong, because we've always had a booming economy up until about 6 yrs ago, and we've had immigrants way before that. So honestly, to me I think it's just prejudice.
illegal alien is the real term, not the PC term now used.
It seems to me that it is counter the spirit of freedom loving America to restrict immigration of decent peace loving people who would love to be free to follow their dreams and aspirations - why not leave them alone. Many of us want to travel to other parts of the world, why can't they? I agree that they should not be expecting to use governmnet assistance - hell I don't think US ciizenz should be getting other peoples hard earned money by force either!
I have no problem with people who have a criminal or violent history being kept out - they would tend to infringe on fello citizen's freedom.
As for bringing foreign deseases in - a country that allows millions of tourists to come in every year cannot really be scared of infectious deseases comming in.
