Is it possible?

Is it possible to have a discussion of legal immigration vs. illegal without it always being about Mexicans? Not all Mexicans are illegal, and not all illegals are Mexican. Sure, Mexicans represent a large portion of immigration, but shouldn't the debate be about government, laws, and policy, not a persons' nationality or country of origin?

Answer:
Yes, it is; however, as soon as illegal immigration rears its ugly head the first thing anyone thinks of is Mexicans.
Of course it is.

I'm aware there are many nationalities who come here illegally. I'm aware that the government makes it look 'okay' to citizens from another country to cross the border illegal because there are employers who will hire them. I know most countries take our border policy as a joke because hardly ever any illegal gets reprimanded.

Most people think of the Hispanic community when it comes to illegal immigration soley based on the fact that they do make up for 90% of the problem.
It should be but from what I have seen supporters of illegals are the ones who will bring up Mexicans trying to play the race card to redirect attention from the real issue - illegals. Legal status has nothing to do with race, religion, ethnicity, country of birth or skin color. People play the race card to attempt to discredit people who do not agree with them even when everyone knows race plays no part in it.
of course, but i'm in High School, and as ever since i've been in junior high, and subject or immigrants, people would always mention mexicans and i never realized until high school that yes, most of them are mexican, but a good portion of them aren't..

this is really really sad, because i'm like not an idiot, and watch the news and all, but this is how i grew up, and i'm not racist or anything, but i'm just trying to make the point that people talk about this topic too much, (i mean like involving the mexicans,) i mean, it's alright i guess, if people would like to talk about immgration, but i totally and completley agree with you, about how it's ridic. about how it's always about the MEXICANS!! argh

lolz

I appreciate your acknowledgment of this fact.If all others felt this way, we could a real have a discussion and ultimately a REAL solution...
I'm with you 100%. I think the only forum exists on National Public Radio.
yes
It's possible, at least in theory. Though Mexicans do make up a disproportionate fraction of illegal immigrants, that's primarily due to an accident of geography.

It's also theoretically possible to object to illegal immigration without being labeled a racist - but I haven't seen that happen, either.
I believe that everyone should have the right to show and speek on their own behalf proof of citizen ship or what ever. Discimination is a problem with every man woman and child of every race color and creed in this country. It is all about who has the money and the power. And who can steal the most legally and get away with it.
I agree with you.
illegal is illegal no matter skin color or what the person has done against the law.
to tell you the truth no. it is very hard for politicians today to have any sort of discussion involving immigration because i guarantee you that they will always say that its the Mexicans. I'm not saying that they are not b/c like many people have said before me, they do make up a large portion of the immigrants in the great U.S.A. what they need to do is really look at who are the ones making the problems. somehow every time there is an attack on the U.S. the Mexicans get blamed. if they don't want them here then why don't they just kick every Mexican that is working in a minimum wage job and send them back to where they came from. lets see who serves them their food and mows their lawn. oh and one last thing not all immigrants are Mexicans, there are Salvadorians, Hondurans and others from Hispanic countries
Thank you for bringing this point up.I am so tired of people constantly bashing Mexicans.I just recently saw a comment that Mexico harbored Nazis during WWII. Doesn't everybody know Klaus Barbie and Josef Mengele went to Argentina ?
In an ideal world, the answer is yes. But, we don't live in one and the Mexicans are the predominant illegals coming into the country and people are angry as hell about that happening. It would be great if government, laws and policy could be discussed if it would make any difference. However, the government isn't willing to step up to the plate to enforce the letter of the laws and the politicians are dodging the issue because they don't want to offend the Hispanic vote.
