I married someone that is here illegally, but came here legally if that makes any sense to you. She just overstayed on her visa. She was 10 when she got here so didn't really have a choice.
The process to get a green card is very difficult, time consuming and expensive. So far we've spent over 3 thousand dollars in legal fees etc... Just getting married to a US citizen is not a promise of citizenship anymore. That changed many years ago.
We didn't get married so she could stay in the country though. She speaks english better than most people where I live (tennessee) with no accent either so you wouldn't even know she was here illegally.

It is done too often, and it is illegal.
A friend of mine married a woman from Germany, and she cleaned him out and dumped him after 5 years, the legal requirement. She needed to be married 5 years to keep from being deported.
That does not work anymore you can not get married to a us citizen and just become a us citizen if you are illegal or just to get a green card. My friend got married to an illegal immigrant and to become a citizen he still has to go back to mexico and stay there for a year to get all his paper work then try to come back and then he will become a citizen but until he does this there marriage does not make him a citizen. Thats what the us of immigration told my friend.

he divorced with my mom when i was only four... then 2-3 years later he went to germany and married a german woman just to acquire a citizenship so he can stay there for good.. they also divorced about 7 years ago and they never had a child.. i'm 20 now if your asking.. so do the math and you'll see that they lived together for quite a while..
