If the papers came from a government agency or a school, you need to go to them and ask them for certified copies. These will have a seal on them and a certification that the document is a "true copy of the original document" by an authorized person in the agency. If you think you are going to need to provide the documents to several places in Australia, you will need to get multiple certified copies.
You go to a notary and swear to them that the papers are true and accurate. They'll sign stamp and seal it thus making them certified true copies. I've called many times for my alien fiance, and everytime they have been very nice and answered all of my questions. If they do not know the answer they look for it. A friend of ours (she is German) recently married an American soldier I have also called them for her, recently she met with one of the army's lawyers and he confirmed all the info given by USCIS to be accurate.
