How long does it take to become a legal resident after marrying a us citizen?

I am in love with a guy from Boston, hes a US citizen, but I am an Italian citizen, we want to get married, and i was just wondering how long it would take for me to get a green card after I was married to him? Any info will be greatly appreciated, and I thankyou very much before hand!

Answer:
i just talked to an imm lawyer today and they said it can take up to 13 months after you file the papers
As soon as the judge deems you a citizen. You don't get anything when you marry a citizen, you have to go through the paperwork, fingerprinting, paying for an attorney etc...you don't get a free ride just because you are married to a US citizen.
If you are here in valid status and have no issues impacting your eligibility, it can take from 6 to 12 months. The package first goes to the National Benefits Center in Missouri via a Chicago lockbox address, then an interview opening has to come up in Boston.
As soon as you're married, you can file the paperwork to apply for a green card. And it will probably take a year before you get it. However, they will only give you a temporary green card. If you're married for 2 years or more and then apply, they will give you a permanent green card. This is because many people marry just for residency.
They give you a temporary green card within a few weeks. Once you have that you can legally seek employment in the US. If all goes well with your interview, you should have a permanent green card within 2 years. I am a US citizen who married a German and we only had the initial interview. It took about 10 minutes and he said that we wouldn't need to come back for any other follow up interviews. I guess that he could tell that ours was a legitmate marriage.
You may also want to seek the help of an immigration lawyer. It isn't necessary but they can help you with filing the paperwork. Also, take lots of pictures with as many family members as you can. This helps to show a legitimate marriage. I don't recommend taking the lawyer with you to the interview though. Our interviewer could tell that we had the paperwork done by a lawyer and he asked if our lawyer was coming to the interview and he seemed annoyed. When we told him that the lawyer prepared our paperwork but we didn't bring her with us, he seemed much more pleasant. Good luck and congratulations!
Oh and my husband got his permanent green card in two years but we never had any trouble with the temporary card. Also, make sure that you continue to take pictures after you are married because at the two year point you will need to refile the paperwork to get the permanent card.
Sorry for your circumstance.
If by chance you married the guy in the US you can then apply for citizenship ie GREEN CARD and resolve the full issue while here still but if you leave in the meantime you will be classed as having deported yourself.
I married an American woman i`ve known for 15 plus years , we`ve been married for four years and got married in las vegas,we then settled in montana and applied in Helena for our paperwork.
give it some thought and good luck.
6 months to a year. You'll have to wait outside the United States while the paperwork is being processed.
Depending on the local office you have your interview at and the background checks, probably 6 to 12 months for your Conditional green card. When you are married less than 2 years, you become a conditional resident. Two years later, you need to file a petition to remove the conditions of your residence by showing you are still in a bona fide marriage(joint taxes, bank accounts, insurance, leases, children together, etc). ONce that's approved, you'll get the 10 year green card. you can apply for US citizenship after 3 years as a permanent resident, married 3 years and live with your spouse 3 years at the same address. Of course, if things turn sour, there are some ways to still apply for permanent residence/citizenship. Make sure its for real!
I'm a US citizen and my husband is an immigrant from Mexico.
There are no right answers that Anyone can give for this. You just need to make an appointment with a lawer...that is your best bet. He/She can tell you your best options. Just because you marry an American it doesn't make it any faster. Maby easier to get the interviews but for sure not faster. People have told us it can take up to 6 years to get his citizenship. But I'm not going by that. We meet with a lawer in 2 weeks.
