Why do most european countries work less hours?
Answer:
the mentality in Europe is "work to live" not "live to work".. North America could learn a lot from that "mentality".. the system in the US and Canada is a slave driven system.
Europe is more liberal than America and Europeans work less... hmmmm... not too surprising if you ask me...
Because they pay huge taxes and that, in turn, subsidizes many government benefits including vacations or disability at full pay and a host of other things.
if you r som in to the dam uripions then whay dont you ******* move there and find out by yourself
They get a month off every year for "holiday" because they pay more taxes and the government is more involved in their life.
Because the typical American works himself to death. They downsized, right sized . and the typical desk Jockey worked more and more hours to keep up. Look at the heart attack rate.
Edit: And then there is the fact that America seems to think that any management system implemented by the Japanese is made of gold. The latest ones of lean six sigma and pay for performance. These equate to sitting through hours and hours of classes and spending two, three, four hours per week on documentation while NOT GETTING YOUR JOB DONE so you have to spend even more hours at work to keep up.
STUPID!
I left Eurpe just before they actually implemented the shorter work week but it was already in the works. We were told that it was to create more employement. It didn't work for the mst part. According to my relatives and friends, instead of they having to hire more people to make up for it, the employees that were already there just had to work a little faster and goof off a little less.
Because they still have strong unions and don't waste money on foolish things like excessive executive compensation and private health insurance.
It's not just Europe. The japs work fewer hours than Americans, receive better compensation packages, and get six weeks vacation.
That's why they built so many auto assembly plants here. To take advantage of cheap American labor.
To answer your question, when you live in a country where you pay 50% or more of your income in income taxes, not to even mention VAT, you work less. You work less especially if there are good social benefits to fall back on.
If working 10 extra hours per week shoved you into a 65% income tax bracket would you do it?
Most of them, but I think the Scandinavians have the lightest work load
I live part-time in Hungary. Our neighbors work 40 hours per week and sometime a half day on Sat. They do get alot of holidays off here and a month long vacation every year. I know they pay very high taxes here about 20%. They may not work less hours but they seem to enjoy their time off more. They do spend alot of time traveling and with their families.
I heard it's because they value family time more than other places in the world. They take a break during certain times of the year, to go on vacation with their families. I wish I could afford to do the same.
They know how to treat their employee better.maybe our nation could learn from .I'd like a month every year instead of just one week or two. A week to two week vaction just goes by so fast. If I was off for 30-45 days from work, I'd be more relaxed coming back .
