What are the disadvantages of marrying someone overseas for the purpose of helping them become a citizen?

If it's benefiting both, why not?

Answer:
Marriage Fraud is a big NO NO in USA!!!

which provides a penalty of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine for any "individual who knowingly enters into a marriage for the purpose of evading any provision of the immigration laws." Under 8 U.S.C. ยง 1151(b), "immediate relatives" of U.S. citizens, including spouses, who are otherwise qualified for admission as immigrants, must be admitted as such, without regard to other, ordinary numerical limitations. The typical fact pattern in marriage fraud cases is that a U.S. citizen and an alien get married. They fulfill all state law requirements such as medical tests, licensing, and a ceremony. But the U.S. citizen is paid to marry the alien in order to entitle the alien to obtain status as a permanent resident of the United States; the parties do not intend to live together as man and wife. A legal issue arises where the parties tell the INS they are married, and they subjectively believe they are telling the truth because they have complied with state marriage requirements.
There's something like a $250,000 fine and a few years in prison. That would be the downside.
you can be arrested if you divorce in less then 6 months because the government might see it as a fraud , other then that if you love the person marry them
legality and depending on which country they are from, you may never work for parts of the government or certain civilian jobs because you would never be able to get the clearance.
In addition, what if you find someone else that you care about within those 5 years? you won't be able to marry them for a few years. you will have to tell them that you are married (or later that you are divorced)...if you're religious this could keep you from getting married by/in your religion
If you get caught you will go to Federal Prison and pay a huge fine. It's not worth it.

huh, who would do this? i married someone from overseas because i had two duds wives (both from the US) that did not have a clue on what marriage was all about..but i found someone in another culture who i could get along with and now we are going on 25 years of successful marriage..i seen no disadvantages of going foreign when the domestic market is so lacking...look at the auto industry?? FORD? GMC? give me a break..I am tired of the American UAW sloppy workmanship..so i shop abroad! got a problem with that?
If you plan it for the money...DON'T !!! You will be required to file support documents...if he/she gets over here and bums out, tries for public assistance, your on the hook! If you think it's a good idea I need a co-signer on my new truck....wanna help...Oh, let's not forget the illegal, immoral aspects.. Been thru this, met her overseas, married her and still took a lot of time and money....do it for Love OK if it's real, for the money..Not
My dad married a woman from the Philippines. They got married because they love each other. People that commit marriage fraud are the reason why it took them over a year for her to be able to live here in the US. They had to go through interview after interview. If they had been committing fraud, then it would have been a $250,000 dollar fine and up to 20 years in jail. If you need another example, go to sportscenter.com and read about the Dominican pitchers who in 2005 were caught trying to smuggle illegal brides into the US. They are still stuck in the Dominican and can not pitch for the majors.
The government refers to it as the human trafficking trade and cut off visas for a bunch of Dominican Minor League Baseball Players who were can't miss prospects on their way to the Majors. Most of the time it is a scam and the marriage doesn't actually happen. They just run off with your money as their visa request is supposedly denied and they constantly ask for more money, hoping that their victim will pay them.

These things are usually frauds and its in your best interests to avoid them.
How about the fine and time you'll spend in federal prison? To boot, they'll deport the person you married for visa fraud.
