You are right. It is wrong doing and constitutes fraud.
But here's where I disagree:
The problem is that there isn't enough legal means by which to gain entry and employment in the US right now. Because of 9/11, constraints on acceptable means to acquire visas has been seriously diminished.
The majority of illegal immigrants are good, hard-working people. Also, the US Department of labor recently published a study that found that there is no link between illegal immigration and unemployment.
I know many people will disagree with me here, but these people come to America for the same reason that all of our Ancestors came to America. They don't have the opportunities in their country of citizenship to earn a decent living.
More channels for legal immigration need to be offered in order to stop illegal immigration.
For the record, by using someone else's social security number, they are paying taxes and social security out of every paycheck. They will never receive an ounce of the Social Security that they are paying for.
Illegal Immigrants see the use of fictitious SS#'s as a means to a desired end. They know it is wrong, but they have no intention of hurting anyone. The overwhelming majority of them don't hurt a fly. They just perform cheap labor that nobody else will.

Taxes are taken out of the illegal immigrants paychecks along with social security.

Maybe the real question should be: Why are there so few visa numbers available to accomodate immigrants who come to occupy unskilled jobs when the U.S. economy cannot survive without them and the government has no intention of ending illegal immigration? Moneyed land and business owners profit and benefit from the current system because they do not have to pay living wages. They take advantage of a population that is desperate for survival and trying to escape a cycle of poverty. My guess is that if they stayed in their countries and let their families starve to death or took their children out of school after 2nd grade to help earn income for the family, most of you would be saying "What a bunch of idiots, why don't they do something to better themselves..." What, exactly, do you want?
As for the social security # thing, I, too would fake a social security number (which is less of a crime than allowing your children to remain in a cycle of abject poverty) if I were in such a situation.
Most immigrants would like to arrive at a point where they can become contributors, and they do contribute-millions of dollars in income tax which they will never see again even though they are paid well below the poverty line. How? When they contribute to SS and Taxes using fake numbers, the government does not give them a tax return, which they give to most Americans, so who's supporting who? They're not getting a free ride, we are.
