The premise of the question is that we think, live, work, based on how someone else - in this case you call them "the great ones" - tell us!! Someone else actually controls how you think and how you live?!?! That kind of thinking completely baffles me.
Is this part of the whole immigration debate? Do supporters of illegal immigration expect someone else to do something to impact how you live your life? what you think?
As long as you are willing to allow others to control you, you will never be free. I suppose there is a connection to illegal immigration in that illegal immigrants know they are illegal and accept that they will never be free.
I hope you're not waiting for "the great ones" (I assume you mean government), to tell you what to think and how to live. You have more potential in yourself to do good things and accomplish much than the entire government.

I guess it depends by what you mean when you say "great ones". In my humble opinion, I think that for most of us, there is no greater lasting effect we can have on how the world thinks, lives, and works than through raising a large, happy, and productive family. Yes it is true that we all touch people outside of our families, but as far as the opportunity to truly shape and nurture a life, there's nothing that compares to raising your own children. Collectively, those groups who leave this world with large families behind them will be the groups who's ideas on how we should all think, live, and work will prevail. Kinda spooky in that regard huh??

The "great ones" - the religious leaders, the politic leaders, the international Hollywood celebrities, leading breakthrough scientists, our everyday teachers in school or bosses at work?
Pop stars have that effective mass reach from the young to the old. Doesn't matter whether they support the star, something happened, got into a little car accident or getting behind bars, the whole world knows, even the old granny doesn't remember the name of the celeb.
On the negative tone, they can encourage a negative lifestyle to their young impressionable fans.
On the positive side, they gather fans for good causes to save the world, do charity good deeds ... so many supporting groups or projects close to their hearts.
Religious leaders may have a tougher time trying to prove to busy city folks about nurturing the spiritual heart, especially from time to time, false religious ones have misled people. To me, the great ones like Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad - despite they are physically not with us, their teachings are still guiding those who wish to follow. Unfortunately, some did too much of their own interpretation without the full picture of the essence of the teaching and intention.
For the famous loud-spoken current political leaders, mostly I can't term them as great, yet their decisive decision affect the mass. More unfortunately, with the ability to reason the wrong doing with so much gusto : (
The true great ones tend to be behind the scene till needed. I respect the Thai king who holds so much respect from his people.
The great ones - the Americans - have constantly been influencing the world at such pace. The American culture invaded all corners of the world. Its impact is of extremes. I do not disregard the favourable influence but once the trend setters hold the high ego that their lifestyle is the best and feeling the rest of the world must speak the way they do, then this has gone to a wrong track.
True great ones are mostly working for pure good positive results, understanding the need for a natural pace for change, and truly serving the world of a long term achievement that may be achieved even beyond his/her life time.
I term "mediocre" great ones, their doing make such instant impact changes, for fast result, to show the economical figures which when you look far enough into the future civilisation, is this truly what is important and what we should want?
I guess I will always "kow tao" salute to great people like Mother Theresa, Gandhi ... who strives towards PEACE & COMPASSION by leading by example.
