Is it rude for people to speak English when there are present people that only understand Spanish?

Answer:
no, not if you're in the U.S.A...english is our national language, it's not our responsibility to learn other country's languages...if they want to live here they can learn our language.
Only if the people in question can speak Spanish.
NO!
No more so than when the shoe is on the other foot.
Not if the situation is one where English is expected to be spoken, or if the person is only capable of speaking English. If you mean someone who is bilingual speaks English instead of Spanish, in a closed conversation with a few people, and one of them speaks only Spanish... Then it can be seen as rude.
Depends on if you're in an English speaking nation or a Spanish speaking one. To expect the people of a culture you are either visiting or about to emmigrate to to cater to you is ludicrous. If I move to Russia, I will have to learn Russian. I would hope that they would be patient with me, but, they may speak their native tongue, and it not be rude.
Not in a country where the officially accepted language is english.
It would depend upon the forum. Can you be more specific about the situation?
It depends on where you are. If you are in an English speaking country that would never be rude. It is not the host countries responsibility to learn Spanish in order to make the Spanish people more comfortable. If you decide to move to a new country it is your duty to learn their language.
Depends WHERE you are at...Anywhere in the US? Then EVERYONE should speak English.
Maybe if you are in a 'Spanish speaking country' ... but if you are in the U.S.A. then you may speak 'only English' if that is the only language you 'know' and if it is an 'important event' and the 'Spanish speakers' are there to 'listen to what you have to say' then you should provide them with a good Spanish translator. Otherwise, since English is the language spoken in the U.S. it's 'their problem' if they 'don't understand' you, not yours. However, if you have hired someone who speaks/understands ONLY Spanish, it is up to you again, to make sure that person 'understands' what you tell him/her, especially when you are telling that person 'what to do' to complete his/her job.
No - because not everyone speaks Spanish or any other language - but we are in the U.S. of A. and I believe everyone should at least have an understanding of the English language.
if they are in the united states they should be speaking english period!
yes and no.
what's the environment?
is the normal language english or spanish?
it's not reasonable to expect everyone to change, just because walk into the room.
on the otherhand, if the language is spanish all the time, and english is used specifically so that some people can't understand, then it is rude.

but then, rudeness is clearly on the rise, these days.
In your house you do as you wish, now in your neighbor house you do as he ask. In the USA is English in Mexico is Spanish.
Only if you are in a Spanish speaking country or are a speaker of Spanish yourself and choose to exclude the Spanish speaking people from your conversation.
NO THIS IS AMERICA NOT MEXICO THEY SHOULD GO BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM!
I would say no. This is an english speaking country. They need to learn to speak english. If we went to Mexico we would have to learn to speak spanish.
Not if you're in the U.S.
In the US, we speak English. I think its rude when people speak in a foreign language in mixed company here. I would NEVER think to tell another country's people to speak my language while I was a visitor there.
depends what country you are talking about. if it is the USA than no it is not ignorant.

if it was Mexico than yes it is ignorant.
no its not rude... its not your fault they dont speak english... do they care if they talk spanish in front of you and you dont know what they are saying..they could care less... if they are gonna live in US they need to speak english..
I would think that it all depends if the people are involved with conversing with you. You probably already know that answer unless you are bilingual. I have picked up enough of the Spanish language that if possible and they are interested i will translate if possible. Do i think it would be rude, not really. And for me it does not matter if it is America or not, the person may be visiting from another country. But before I learned Spanish I would sometimes feel uncomfortable not knowing what was being said.
Not if you are in the US!!!
Are you in the USA?

Is it rude for people to speak SPANISH when there are people present that only speak ENGLISH?

Silly me, to expect someone to learn english when they move to an english speaking country! What was I thinking!?
In my country (US) I will speak english and if anyone else does not like they can kiss my butt, leave, or try and "make me" speak spanish. I can speak 6 different languages (spanish included) and when ever I am in one of those countries, then I will speak their language, but here, I will speak english.
It most certainly is rude to speak English to a group of Mexican while they are Americans too. We older Americans need to learn how to speak 7 different languages are we will be left out in the cold, I mean we might have a Mexican President that can not speak a work of English now we will look very foolish when he address the nation.
No, not in a country where English is the common language.
In the case of illegal aliens certainly not,
why worry about propriety in the presence of criminals.
It depends on the location and who you are talking about.
1. If everybody in your scenario is in Mexico and everybody present speaks Spanish, but not all speak English, yes, it could be rude to exclude the others.
2. If your scenario is in America and ALL the people present speak Spanish, but not all speak English, yes, it could be rude to exclude those that didn't speak English.
3. If your scenario is in America and the people speaking English only know how to speak English, naturally it isn't rude to not speak Spanish no matter who is present. English is the COMMON language in the U.S., just as Spanish is the COMMON language in Mexico.
4. If people to any country from another country, they should learn the COMMON language of that country.
5. Since English is the common language of the USA, and people come here from nearly every country of the world speaking dozens of languages, don't expect or even think that WE should be expected to learn anybody's language.
If I was in Mexico and living there, yes. Here? No.
How is that rude? Maybe said person doesn't speak Spanish. In which case is it rude for the people who speak Spanish not to speak English to the person who does not understand their language?
