What exactly is Puerto Rico's legal status? Is it not part of the US?

I don't understand why Puerto Rico has it's own Olympic teams and was treated like a separate country in the World Baseball Tournament. Aren't Puerto Ricans US citizens? Do Puerto Ricans need green cards to move to the US?

Answer:
Hi Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States. Think of it like limbo. They're are citizens of the U.S. but don't have representation in congress. The Puerto Ricans have a distinct and vibrant culture, that in many ways is very different from the U.S. Many Puerto Ricans have called for the island to become a sovereign nation, while others have voiced their desire to become the 51st state. In the recent past, Puerto Ricans have elected to keep their status as a common wealth.

Hope this helps
COMMON WEALTH!!!
