Why is the debate on illegal immigration going on only now?
Why only now?
If it was such a big problem, why wasn't it stopped earlier then?
Does the fact that it was tolerated for so long, unlike terrorism, mean there are some benefits to the US economy?
Answer:
Well it's like this.
In the 90's I seen a show on 20/20 about illegal immigrants being forced in to labor camps in Florida, they were promised the American dream only to be kidnapped.
These poor people WERE not being paid and not paying taxes.
Not only that, but the illegal immigrants who weren't being slaves but getting paid, the employers didn't pay their taxes for these people, lost government income!!
Now if the illegal immigrants get hurt on the job the employer doesn't have to pay him Workman's compensation insurance, now does anyone here think that's right? No it isn't.
So now we have a President (Bush) that has a problem with this.
He was trying to help them.
Yes there are over a million of them here, they deserve help, and they do job's that no one wants!!
Making them LEGAL immigrants is a win, win situation.
Dr. Michael Savage warned us about it in 94, and has since then. Maybe you guys should listen to him more.
But really, this is the effect the media has on this country. They determine the hot-button issues, and the politicians then jump on to get re-elected.
Hey Jimithy, of course we gripe about the Mexicans coming over. 57% of the illegals are mexican, and another about 25% latino. So if we say mexican over half the time we are right, and it would be a huge step forward for the cause to kick the MEXICANS out of the U.S.
you are perfectly correct
Because Congress has been asleep at the wheel.
I suspect it has less to do with immigration and more to do with people's racism towards Mexicans. You don't hear people bitching about the other illegals in this country, only the Mexicans.
It's all about distraction, my friend. Gay marriage too. Look at how much time the media focuses on these issues, then compare it to how much time they focus on the wars we wage. Pathetic.
It's been a problem for many years but only recently come into the public and political spotlight as an actual issue ever since the illegals started marching our streets waving their foreign flags and demand rights they don't deserve.
By doing that, they awoke the sleeping giant.
I think it has a lot to do with the current situations. We have people that are talking about an amnesty bill which basically says that if you are here, just tell us, and you're in. Meanwhile back up North, there are people waiting for citizenship and now if you are from Mexico, you are in? That is not fair, and can be quite upsetting. There are a lot of idiots that think it's not fair to kick people out of the country if they are illegal. I think the bill in front of congress is a joke. I think Mexico is a big joke, their govt helps them get in. And why not, they send our american dollars back home. I am not racist, but why is this happening just for the guys and gals from the south? That is not fair, and the govt. officials see them as a vote. I can't wait for this thing to get passed and then they see what will happen.
It has been growing in volume with the numbers. Look at the laws passed in 1996. However, cumulative numbers matter. And when we are suffering and expecting our representatives to make things better for US and they come out with a bill fixated only on making things better for those who broke the law and for big business who wants even MORE workers to strain our services, we get mad.
Teddy Roosevelt warned us 100 years ago about this!
Um...you must have been living in a bomb shelter the last 30 years, because illegal immigration has been in discussion for a long time.
There has always been a debate in regards to illegal immigration. It's just that the people of the U.S. are not being heard! It's like we don't mean a thing to our government. There is so much political correctness going on that the American people are afraid of being called racist if they disagree with one group or the next. Now that our government is trying to get the people to accept another 20 million or so illegal aliens into the country... the tax payers (the ones who generally foot the bill to take care of these criminals) are finally saying "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"! What do you expect from us.
No,
It just means that we have a lazy goverment. They want to take the easy way out. We need to
1) Fence the borders
2)Bring our soldiers home and put them on the borders
(shoot to kill--no reprocussions)
3)Punish - with fines and litigation- the people who hire these Illegals
You are young, aren't you. You should also read your history. The congress gave amnesty to many illegals years ago with no appreciable benefit to the American people. It only caused more of them to come and cost us money money. Our Politicians are looking for new voters, so they are again pandering to illegals. We actually have an immigration bill on the books. but our weak-kneed politicians won't enforce it.
I might not be totally up on current events pal, but this has been going on for some time.however it has come to a head it seems, due to the sheer stupidity of this bill which is a complete and utter sham! The downfall of Western Civilization continues...
EDIT-joe4912004> right on the money!
Well it was addressed the wrong way in 86" Basically nothing was done to slow it and now its at an all time high, never before have we had as many as 12-20 million illegal immigrants that coupled with very bad trade policies that have outsourced many of our low skilled jobs out of the country puts illegals in direct competition with our already low skilled work force that doesn't want to work for low wages , no health care and in dangerous work conditions.
W when he first came to office, one of the things he wanted to do was make a separate immigration policy with Mexico, but 911 put a stop to that. So now he wants to grant amnesty to all
Jimithy...we aren't bitching about the other illegals because they LEARN THE LANGUAGE!! They assimilate, they don't make demands and organize protests!!!
