Should I move to Canada?/What's wrong with Canada?
Hi, I'm an American trying to determine whether I should move to Canada with my family. While both of our countries offer the promise to many of the same civil liberties, it appears that you may actually possess more of those freedoms. As a libertarian, the paternalistic policies of the US are anathema to me. In researching the pros and cons of moving, I was looking for was some actual first-hand information from Canadians as to the living conditions up there (specifically between London and Toronto, Ontario). Can you think of reasons why I wouldn't want to come?
Thanks!
Jim
Answer:
Well, if the paternalism of the US offends you don't come here. The rest of the civilized world looks at your country and sees it as individualism gone mad. Take pensions, or healthcare in Canada, private pensions are more regulated, public pensions have a less direct relationship to social security(CPP) levies during your life time - to be less polar. It is against the law in Canada to pay a surgeon for faster treatment then you'd recieve publicly. If you file income tax with an income of $1200 that says you're living with your parents you get $58 dollars every three months to help you with your GST burden(a sales tax of 6% not levied on most groceries, or even bulk bin candies). Canada is *way* more paternalistic than the US.
Sum it up in one word. C-O-L-D...
uhh freezing your backside would be the only thing I could think of ,,but I have always wanted to see the vast forest up there
so dress warm and enjoy
Post your question in 'Canada' section.
You'd be crazy if you moved from the US to canada. Do your research first. And the best way to find out what life in canada is like is by checking it out yourself by visiting canada and staying there for a while. I think one sunny day in California is worth the best canada has to offer.
Having moved from country to country I'd advise to be very careful about moving to another country. Its hard to explain what the culture shock will be like once you get there, make sure you do a lot of research before you go.
Just think of Canada as a huge suburb of the US. I live in Chicago and couldn't imagine living in the suburbs.
Enjoy your white picket fence and the ride into the city every weekend.
It's lovely - wouldn't want to live there -
Jim ,
