Answer:
When an immigrant comes to this country, sooner or later that immigrant speaks English. In order to function at any level, they must learn to speak it. Just like you would do if you moved to a foreign country. It would take you a while, but sooner or later you would have it down pretty good.
In most countries in the world, students are REQUIRED to learn English as it is the language of commerce in the world.
What I find shameful is that our country is one of the very few countries that don't require our students to take another language. I think it should be mandatory - either French or Spanish.
To become a citizen, it is REQUIRED that one can speak and read the English language.

I find it very sad that they dont learn english it shows their apathy toward a country that supports them and what will happen is more and more Americans will learn Spanish and that will just keep the lazy people that wont learn english down for a longer time,oh well nobody ever said we were letting the cream of the crop flood our borders.
Well, this is a question forum, not a blog page. However, it is expected of someone to learn the language of the country they move to. If they find it too difficult (and it IS difficult) they must be prepared to recieve negative responses from people like you and me and have a slightly more difficult life. Comprende?
It is sad that many people do not try to learn the language or at least get by.
Speaking a foreign language is very difficult. I speak fluent Spanish, English, Italian, French, Portuguese and learning one to the other was very difficult. Especially for the elderly people who are already set in their ways. They are the ones who are already more assimilated in their ways.
It does not offend me not upset me, it does sadden me especially when I know it is just our of lazyness. That is not the case for ALL of them.

I don't think it is sad. English is my third (not even second) language. But my fluency has nothing to do with anything but that I actually wanted to learn it, not needed to. There is enough going on in my first two languages for people to get on with their lives, some without the need to ever learn English. Of course, as universal as English has become, it helps to learn it, but believe me, even 'apes' would have a hard time in my country. Nothing sad or abnormal there. Just the nature of things.

Why doesn't Mexico make learning English mandatory in their schools. No, they want us to make Spanish mandatory so we can accommodate them.
Doesn't bother me. It does bother me when people talk about me in their native language and assume that I don't understand them. I speak English fluently and a bit of Cantonese, French and Japanese.
Just out of curiosity are you European or from Croatia/Yugoslavia region? I got the impression that you were considering the languages you said you spoke.
I think if people want to come to this country they should at least make an attempt to learn english. I realize that it is hard to learn another language, but if they at least try it will not be as bad.
