How can one get a copy of a W2 form from six years ago, which is requested for immigration purposes?

A friend has been in this country many years, as a political asylum refugee. Now she is getting her chance for permanent residence, but immigration has requested copies of W2 forms and tax statements from a few select years. She cannot find one of the years involved. She had the same employer for 2001 and 2002, and has the W2 from one year but not the other. She both paid and filed taxes for that year but cannot find the records. What can she do? Can she receive copies of the lost records? Can she otherwise provide proof of having paid her taxes that year, since obviously the IRS knows she did if they check their records. How can she get the records or copies that she needs? It does not seem at all fair to be denied her residency simply because she misplaced an old W2 form, when the government could check themselves and see that she did pay her taxes. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Answer:
She can get IRS issued W-2s in 1-2 business days from Accuverify.com
If she paid taxes for that year she can request a copy directly from the IRS by calling and asking what form she needs. Otherwise if they were prepared by a place like H&R block then she can contact them and get a copy, they have to keep copies in case of audits.
You can actually ask IRS for an official Transcript of your taxes for the specific year that you need. I don;t know how much time your friend has but I should warn you it takes about a month or two. I think you can put in the request through fax. Check on the IRS website www.irs.gov
Yeah, the IRS can give her a transcript.

For the one that includes the W2 information she would want the regular form 4506.
She also may be able to order a copy from her employer. I was able to get one from 5 years ago from my previous employer, however they can charge a small fee for that.
