On a personal note, 2 of my great-grandfathers were immigrants. One was Italian, and came in 1915. The other was Hungarian, and came in 1911. Both worked in the PA coal mines, along side Slovacs, Polish, Slovenians, Russians, and Czech. Many of the Eastern Europeans worked in the steel and coal industries, at least here in PA they did. My Hungarian g-grandfather was killed in a mine collapse, crushed to death.
You could do an interesting paper on the mine towns. The houses were owned by the coal companies, and the miners were often paid in scrip - only usable at the company store, which charged over-inflated prices. It was very hard for an immigrant in the mines to ever save money, and get out into other industries. It was almost a legal form of slavery, and until the unions came in, they had no voice at all.
