the IRS when they think you are not reporting all your income.

It isn't a matter of paying taxes on your behalf....
Its a matter of identity theft that generates credit cards that are not yours, that damage very deeply into the future of those who get violated.

First. Who is stupid enough to let someone use their Social
Security Number.
Second. Illegals are not worried about Social Security. they
are interested in being in the United States.
Third. With the Social Security drying up in another ten years,

You don't. The SS fund puts them in a suspense account. However, IRS does come after you for taxes on the excess wages. It happens all the time.
The persons who's social security # is used, But finally I hear some rational of a valid point. ID theft, there is that potential for misuse of a persons identity, but I would believe this is more of a crime in mainstream America, than illegal immigration, they buy forged SS# to get employment.
The IRS checks the W2s or 1099s issued with your ssn against your taxes. IF the name is close then they contact you for a possible underpayment of taxes. If the name is different then they go to a suspended account and sits in there. BTW that is not real money the govt is in debit up to its ears. Now do the illegals pay taxes. not if they talk to other illegals. You can claim as may dependents as you wants it cuts down on the taxes they pay and you get in your check. They can also apply for advanced earned income credit and get the little benefit also. Why can't legals do the same thing? It is because they are using their ssn and come tax time they owe the govt and it can collect against your wages and/or bank account. The govt doesn't notify you when others are using your ssn.
Money paid to SSA today is used to fund SSA today. When the SSA calculates your retirement they base it on your earnings over your lifetime. They have a record of where (city and state) you worked and when. They don't count any discrepancies. So if someone used your number it does not hurt nor help you.
Also, the SSA does, in fact, send letters out if they find that two people are using the same social security number. They will even notify a parent if someone tries to work with their child's number. (My daughter received such a letter concerning her son who was only 3 at the time). Employers are also notified if a number has more than one user.
The SSA and the IRS are the only federal agencies that share social security and income information to try to prevent people from collecting tax returns and other benefits that they are not entitled to.
