Joel has given a very thorough information abt how to apply to become Australian PR.
However, I do not agree abt applying for student visa, since there are plenty of restrictions of what you can do, especially jobs. If your partner is an Australian, then use the opportunity to get PR. Once you got PR, you can then study full-time and work part-time or vice-versa.
A word of advise, just be patient with the PR procedure though. You can apply directly to Australian Embassy/High Comm, or thru immigration agency like:

will you could try to get permanent residency. what you need to do is have proof that you have been living with your partner for about 6 months (can live here on a work visa which lasts for 1 year, or on a student visa). keep evidence like mail, bank details to prove you have lived with your gf in a defacto relationship. then you will have to get a form from imigration and get two other witnesses' that need to be citizens of australia to fill out the form and you pay $2000. if immigration approves it you need to pay a further $3000 and you will then become a permanent resident of australia.
if you are only intending to study, apply just for a student visa from the UK
