Bring a phrase book and dictionary, but you probably won't get a chance to use it. I TRY to speak German there, but they all want to practice their English...
And some people think the exchange at airports isn't the best and you may want to change some money before you go, in any event, just so you don't have to do it while traveling. People differ on the benefits of that. Hotel exchange rates suck, just so you know.

I went May of 2006 and had a blast and my husband used to travel there for work 4 to 6 times a year.
Before you can buy the ticket, you will need enough money to pay for it.
Know how much the German Mark is worth, or whether they are using Euros for money. Be prepared with some German phrases and dictionary, although a lot of them know English. And most important--lol, find out if their beer is cold.
Adaptors for your electrical appliances, hair dryers etc.. Make sure your appliances can handle the electricity. Some already have switches to bring down the current level. Make sure yours has that. I can't really think of anything else. Money would be good. I hope you have fun there.
Enough money to make a decent exchange into Euro, since the dollar is worth less. Suitcase and things, and learning numbers and greetings in German would probably be good also.

I recommend a phrase book, as many germans prefer to only communicate in their own language (or the ones I've met do!)
Also a small book on germany would be good, one possibly from the library, telling you the best places to stay, restaurants to eat in and places to see!

You will need to call your credit card companies before leaving to let them know you will be in Germany during a specified time period. Otherwise, the card security people may freeze your use of the cards because of 'out of area' use. They use the euro not marks and there are ATM's most everywhere. Learn the polite phrases, and even if you don't speak German, a lot of them will try to help you. Most older Germans don't or don't want to speak English. Your best bet is with younger Germans who are polite and helpful. Learn how to say hello, goodbye, please, thank you, you're welcome, have a nice day/evening, do you speak English, where is the, how much is this, etc. and it will open a lot of doors for you. Otherwise, you will feel retarded and they will treat you the same way. Stay out of the left lane if you are driving on the autobahn as that is the high speed lane and unless you are comfortable driving 100+ mph then stay to the right or you either get a ticket or cause a crash. Remember einfarht means entrance and ausfarht means exit and zimmer free is a room available. Most rooms come mit fruestuck(with breakfast). They believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast will include lunch meats, breads, soft boiled eggs, cheeses, fruits, yogurt, and cereals. What they serve you is yours, you can eat it all or make a sandwich and take it to go for lunch or snack. They do not have laundramats like in America except in major cities like Frankfurt. Plan your clothing accordingly. It will be humid during the summer and fall. Smaller places will usually have a laundry that you can drop clothes off at to have them cleaned, pressed and returned. But, that takes time and it's not cheap. Wash and wear stuff is the way to go. So, bring a couple of throwaway wire hangers for the bathroom to dry stuff on. Other than that, the beer is cold, they drive on the same side as Americans, obey the speed limits and traffic signs, and enjoy the slower pace. Some of the best food, beer, and scenery in the world.
