It's just for travel taking you out of the country. If your simply traveling to another city or state in the U.S., you don't need to take your passport.
not after ur here and through customs ... once ur in and ur traveling to locations within the borders there is no passport check ... but whats the problem ... i dont see it ...

If you are a US citizen, you need no paperwork. However, if you are not a citizen it is best to carry your Social Security card and your Green Card (if you have one).
