Sorry..I think you are mostly wrong. Slaves don't really have choices, illegal immigrants do. For instance, illegal immigrants choose to come to this country illegally. Slaves were forced into the U.S. I also wouldn't assume that the majority of illegal's aren't making a decent wage. When you account for the fact that these workers don't pay taxes on their income + the many other services they are getting for free or pay less on, some of them are actually making decent wages. Don't assume that all of these workers are making $5 an hour. Even if they were making $5 an hour it's not bad if there is no income tax. With income tax, $5 is about a $20,000 - $30,000 a year income assuming a 5 day a week, 10 hour day with an occasional overtime. These people think they're not making a lot of money, try being an artist. I don't see artists complaining. Some of these workers, especially in construction are making $10 to $25 an hour under-the-table. If paying income tax, we're talking about $40,000 to $80,000+ a year. I used to work in landscaping 10 years ago. The illegal's I worked with were making $9 an hour under-the-table. I was making $11 an hour but paying taxes. They actually made more than me. Believe me, were I live, I see illegal Pedros and Juans driving around all they time in brand new trucks with a lawnmower and rakes in the back.
Yes, the businesses want cheap labor. I wouldn't necessarily say that wanting cheap labor is pure greed. There are a lot of factors that come into play. Suppose your competitor decides to hire illegal's and becomes way more profitable than your business and also can afford to sell his products cheaper. If you wanted your business to survive, remain competitive, and put food on your families plate, you'd need to get the cheap labor as well. Hiring illegal's is contagious. It has a rippling effect. It's necessary to survive in many types of industries. Get rid of the cheap labor and everyone can have a level playing ground. Keep cheap labor and more and more businesses will have to hire cheap labor to survive. So, I wouldn't jump the gun on assuming this is a greed, the richer getting richer scheme that's going on. Many of these businesses owners were your average Americans who wanted to have a legitimate business independent of illegal laborers. They spent the time and the capital to make their business dreams come to a realization. Many of them had to assume a lot of debt and risk to make their business dreams come true. So after years of hard work in planning a business, saving up money, assuming debt and risk, what do you think you're going to do when your competitor hires an illegal workforce and then therefore is able to retain what were once your customers? Are you just going to give up an quit? Are you going to let yourself go broke and not be able to pay your rent or mortgage? Do you want to be able to pay for your children's school books. I don't want there to be an illegal workforce in the U.S. I don't want there to be illegal's in the U.S. at all. I don't want any form of amnesty for illegal's in the U.S. Believe me when I say, not all business owners who hire illegal's are greedy crooks. They are trying to survive in whatever industry it is that they are in. If you want to know whose fault it is so many businesses use an illegal workforce, find the first guy that ever hired an illegal worker. He started a chain reaction and is responsible for many companies giving away American jobs that Americans used to do and will still do if given a decent wage. Then again, you can just blame our government for not enforcing our laws. Everybody is a little bit at fault, even everyone who voted for our politicians who haven't been doing anything about enforcing the laws. Barely anybody, if anybody at all, could have predicted 50 years ago how large the mass influx of illegal immigrants would be and what the effects of such a influx would be including the drop in wages, Americans loosing jobs, the resentment of taxpayers, the idea of a weaponless invasion, the growth of gangs, the dropping in property values, and the overall effect of a having a population of people living in America who aren't loyal to America and don't wish to really assimilate. One thing is for sure, if you are a real American, do what you can to protect America in your own way, everyday! Show no respect to people who have shown you no respect as an American living in America.

i think you re an idiot. perhaps you have never been to California, but i live there, and you can see the acres and acres and acres never ending of fields with crops. Most of them have to be manually maintained, not with just machines. If we payed the workers minimum wage i'm afraid most of these farms would just go out of business. think of it from an economic stand point.

For those who say they are not slaves, they are! Black slaves were NOT paid money, they were paid with housing and food from slave owners.When the slaves were finally freed, many didn't want to leave.They had no where to go, and who would hire them? There are alot of other underemployed people trading services for resources, working for less than minimum wage or below a living wage, who don't get paid at all, who can't compete for a job, who are homeless, etc. I'd like to see more care taken for them before people start jumping on the bandwagon to help Mexicans. The immigrants are getting those crap underpaid cash jobs women, part time workers, transients, students, and others used to get and can't get now. Some of those folks (Americans) got better jobs, but many are unemployed or still underemployed in the same labor market. Most of these poor discriminated against immigrants are doing better than me, so I'm not concerned yet with their slavery factor. I'm way more concerned with the majority of the poor and underemployed and unemployed that are Americans.

I agree. The first thing we Americans ought to do is to BOYCOTT the businesses that hire illegals. If enough of us do just that, they will have to change their ways. Second, each and every time an immigration and amnesty reform bill comes up for congressional vote, we must carry out a calling and writing campaign to inform our elected officials that they are in office to WORK FOR US. Their jobs will be on the chopping block if they pass that stupid bill. Next, we still need to get a writing and calling campaign for informing our congress that we MUST HAVE UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE COVERAGE for every man, woman, and child in America and it MUST BE FREE. We must get big business out of our health care and we must demand it TODAY!!

Not even close to the same thing! Slaves were sold to the Colonials after being purchased by the slave traders in Africa. They had no choice, most were captives of other tribes who'd have killed them or worked them to death. The illegals are those who come here to make it on the coattails of Americans who've built this nation to what it has become and they think they'll get money for the folks back home. And they sneak into our country for this opportunity. I think any one who hires them is a cretin and should be deported just like the illegals. Also they expect America to house, feed, educate, fix their boo boos and help them to take our jobs with no recourse. They are the not smart enough to realize that when the businesses are done with them, they'll be thrown back just like a fish that is too small to eat.
Yes we need to stop illegal immigrants...but that is a long way from slavery. These people come to the US under their own power and are not forced into crossing the border. AND they do so for the work available here because the pay (although low pay) is much more than they can expect in their own country. Also, they are not without benefits as the welfare system in this country covers their medical, educational and other needs without them earning that right. They pay nothing into our system DUE to the fact they are undocumented and nothing is withheld from their income to contribute to US social programs.
