Is the new immigration policy in Arizona that fines employers for hiring illegals a good thing?

I personally believes it is. In order to get a handle on the problem we need to address the reason that we have the problem. One reason is that a great deal of illegal immigrants come here to work. I believe that we need more reform along with this but this is definitely a step in the right direction. What does everyone else think?

Answer:
The policy is a good one and a start. Unfortunately, not every business is competing at a local level so the Arizona policy will be unfair to many businesses if the law is not applicable to all of the US. For example, if the guy who owns a small farm in Arizona can no longer hire an illegal workforce but some guy in Oregon can get away with it, chances are and assuming they have the same customer-base, the guy in Oregon will make more money and be able to sell his products cheaper. The guy in Arizona won't be able to compete with the prices of the guy in Oregon and it will be difficult for his business to survive unless he adapts a business model that allows him to only do business in Arizona were everyone is effected by the same law including his competitors in Arizona. The law that is in Arizona should be in effect everywhere in the U.S. The people that will be rewarded are the people who have been running an honest business, illegal-free, and that struggled to compete against those who hire an illegal workforce. These people already know what it's like to struggle. They are pros at struggling. The businesses that rely on the cheap labor, they'll have their own foot up their you know what.
Mandatory prison time for anyone hiring an illegal alien would be better!
Yeah, I think it's great!
I'll get tons of thumbs' down, but, yes, it is a good idea. Not only will it help us get a grip on illegal immigration, it prevents employers from taking advantage of illegals as well.
Yes, I believe it is. Its a wonderful way to stop the flow of illegals onto the area. Now if only Texas can come up with something like that!
yeah its a brill thing
yes i think it is a good thing it needs to be all over the US.
Absolutely this should be a federal policy and the fines the government collects should go to immigration agents or the Department of Homeland Security.
There is no argument to allow illegal immigration. Thousands of immigrants come here legally every year so why can't everyone do it the right way?
Excellent
and one more thing ,
CLOSE THE BORDERS , NOW !!!
Here's a thought; they could use the fine money from the employers to secure our borders! Now why didn't they think of that?
Of course it is.
It is for them, but for the rest of the states that don't follow suit it is bad. If the feds won't do what their job says they should do, then the states have to take action - ALL STATES!
I really don't think a fine is enough. So many people are out of work and so may jobs are going to illegal immigrants cause they will work for less money. The problem is that the employers are either not being fined enough or the fine is not that big of a threat. I really think Jail time would do it.
Honestly though, if it didn't cost so much to live in America we could all work for what little pay the immigrants receive.
This was part of the' 86 Immigration Bill. employers would be fined for knowingly hiring illegal imigants. Of course, they have been hiring illegals all over the states since then... not just Arizona... but no one at the state level has ever enforced this because the federal government looks the other way.
So, don't expect any big changes. A few employers may be fined so the government can save face, but it will be nothing more than a light slap on the wrist.
It is GRRRRRREAT! Every state should implement the same policies! Talk about getting illegals under control! Go after the crooks. Everyone talks about it, Arizona does it!
Umm, i work with a bunch of illegals but they make themselves look legal. They pay like $600 to get a social security card and a fake name. half of them dont even know their fake names. So even if people tried to enforce it a lot of them would check out.
That's nothing new, unless they're now doing it at the state level. Federal law requires employers to maintain I9 forms for every employee. If they are missing any for any employee they can be fined per occurrence per day.
I think it is a good thing that ALL employers share part of the responsibility of checking for illegal immigrants. It is not only in Arizonia but every state with packing plants or harvesting of fruit or vegetables.
Of course it is. If you're going to receive wages in America, you need to be here legally and be responsible for yourself. That goes for anyone, from anywhere, who's working in any country not their own. Anyone who's helping people come illegally, inadvertently or intentionally, needs to do some more extensive background checking.
Dumb idea, but then what is the real reason?
.
Maybe to kick the government into enforcing the laws passed in the Regan administration that make it illegal to employ illegal immigrants?
,
hmmmmm,,, maybe now people will realize who is really behind all the opposition to immigrant reform and why?
,
Could it be that the Republicans, who have received millions in campaign contributions from the very companies breaking the law, can't or won't do anything to hurt their friends?
.
Think about all the union busting that has been going on with companies hiring immigrant labor instead of union labor and how the government does nothing about it.
Think about all those illegals mowing the lawns around all those mansions.
Then you'll realize just where Arizona is really going.

I think it is a good idea but I feel it is not a solution to a bigger problem. I think we should send Mexico a bill for the billions of dollars we are spending a year on illegal health care coverage, schooling, and also for welfare for illegal immigrants. Why is America constantly paying for other countries mistakes Don't we have enough problems of our own.
Well it is a start in the right direction .
It is a great thing and a great start. I only hate the reason why the Governor of Az signed it. She felt that she has to make a mockery of the federal system to get it changed. She put the beliefs of her party and behind her own ambition.

She gave an interview stating she didn't want to sign it and doesn't agree with it but she has no choice she needs to make people realize how messed up the country is in regards to immigration.

But, whatever her reasoning...I am happy it is a law. I would be a frequent caller to report the businesses if I lived there.
Yes it is,some illegals have already put their homes on the market and left!
Yes!
If you want to see Arizona going bankrupt, then they can fine employers who hire illegal immigrants. What's more, Arizona doesn't have the money that is needed to make this law work. Stop dreaming and come to reality, as much as it is hard to you to accept, Illegal immigrants are the base of Arizona's economy, ask Mr. Bashas, owner of a supermarket chain who decided to open hispanic supermarkets and he sells more than anybody in Arizona. Janeth Napolitano has to overturn that law.
